Recently I’ve managed to source two heavily damaged Team Rocket Unlimited Booster Boxes at £850 each.
The guy who is selling them to me clears abandoned houses, and came across 3 boxes. He knew nothing about Pokemon, but researched them online and opened the most damaged box to check condition. The packs inside were completely mint.
I personally think this is a good deal, as I see mint boxes going for £1300-1500 each, but have little experience with sealed product - I mainly just deal with graded cards.
My 3 main questions are:
How much does box condition affect price? There is obviously the market for sealed box collectors, but I believe the market for sealed pack collectors, as well as the demand for genuine unweighed packs, means the price should be more heavily influenced than these two factors?
Is it worth keeping them sealed? (I’ll post pics later to see the damage - one is quite a bit more damaged than the other) Due to the damage I doubt anyone would want one for their sealed booster box collection, but I guess the element of having them sealed shows that they contain 100% guaranteed unweighed packs.
Is this actually a good deal? £1700 for 72 unweighed mint Team Rocket booster packs sounds good to me, but as mentioned before, I rarely deal with sealed product, so I’m not sure if this is actually as good a deal as I think it is.
(Pending pictures) The only people that will want them sealed are most likely going to open them (poketubers). Realistically you could probably get $1200-1500 out of them each if you find a buyer. If you decided to open them you’d get ~$40 a pack but they’d take forever to sell.
Are you set on selling? Personally I would keep them in the collection for a while and sell them down the road when A. They’re worth more and B. I find something I really want/need. They’d be great trade bait.
^ @jcincy101 has had a lot of a success opening booster boxes and selling the packs. You could even take video of you opening the boxes as he has done to prove that they’re unweighed; many would pay a premium to have the knowledge that the packs are unweighed. It sounds like a great deal to me.
1: the price differs for different collectors, who have different desires/goals. I wouldn’t pay $3500 for a beat up base box, but would for a mint one. It also depends on how beat up the box is, but even if a poketuber is buying one to open it, I’m sure they wouldn’t pay top marker value. In my opinion, case fresh / mint boxes deserve a solid premium
2: I would keep them sealed. You can always open them later unless the condition is straight poop on the box
Thanks for all the feedback guys - solidified what I was thinking about it being a good find.
The first box he opened was way more beat up than the one on the left, and as mentioned, packs were mint - despite the mould on the bottom. I might follow in @jcincy101 's footsteps and sell unweighed with a video for proof (I also have pretty good eBay rep, which would help).
Box on the right isn’t in terrible condition, so definitely won’t be cracking that one open and will probably keep it in the collection for now.
That being said, if anyone has trade interest drop me a message (sorry if not allowed on this post, can move to buy/trade thread).
Condition does affect price. If a sealed box has some of the seal removed, I’d pay less personally. Anyone else the same? Same thing with smashed corners etc.
@pokehaul, The more packs you sell together the less each one brings. Its really hard to get maximum value out of packs if you just put them in one big lot. If you’re looking to just recoup some capital you could sell them all fairly quickly, but if you’re patient you can sell them off individually for more.
I may go down the long route for one box and keep one in my collection, as I could do with the capital right now.
That being said, I do have a lot of other stuff to sell, so only time will tell.
Was also keeping an eye on this auction that ended yesterday - a box went for $2225.
Although this was mint, it is an extraordinary amount of money for a Team Rocket unlimited
@pokehaul, I saw that, it’s crazy that they’re coming near base set boxes. IMO rocket is one of the more lack luster WOTC sets (excluding base 2 and LC of course)
