How do you feel about proxy/custom cards?

This is all potentially true. But it all goes down the drain when you realize that it’s a made up serial number a barcode that does not scan and the QR code on the back of the label opens up a message that states “this card is a replica” plus everyone else n my family knows not to sell my shit unless stated lol

I get that. It’s not a knock on you either. Just that there are a LOT of really really dumb people out there.
We instantly know something is fake, but ebay auctions still end for $700 on those types of cards

As if the average boomer would be able to scan a QR code or look up a PSA serial number

My first graded card purchase years ago was an Albert Pujols PSA 9 rookie card. I had no clue how to verify if the slab was real or not. I didn’t even consider that there could be fakes out there.

Coop for example sells a ton of people their first ever graded slab. All ages, there are newbies who don’t know any better

Isn’t that what every fake slab is? A replica?

Yes they cannot be passed off as real at all whatsoever EVER.

There is no reason to ever own a proxy.

Custom cards (also known as orica) are neat and i enjoy them.

Yet oricas are a twist on someone else’s creation aka plagiarism as well…

ah wait i think we have a different understanding of what custom cards are and thats on me.

Orica are original cards, its not like its just ripping art from tpci or anywhere its literally an original work. No plagarism happening. (Unless you think using a character counts as plagarism in which i disagree.)

I mean technically going by everything else here in the thread I think a character owned by the pokemon company is their IP and thus profiting off of Orica including a pokemon would be classified as stealing, if I understand some of the other replies correctly?

Depends on the legal context, in the US yes in China no

Personally I don’t like proxy cards of actual cards…but I have to admit some of the custom pokemon pocket cards are pretty nice. This is one of several cards I got from a good buddy of mine

These are my favorite types. Any original non-holo card with holo added is 10/10 amazing to me. There are two dragonairs because one technically has a Holo bleed through the whole thing and it feels really gross almost like thin styrofoam but I wanted to compare them.

Those two full art Pikachu I think came together, I wanted the ridiculous starry one on the left. I was very interested in how texture works on these fakes. I might try to acetone some and see what’s left. The legend cards I am buying the real ones of but those are going in my art binder so I put these printed-together versions in their species binders for fun.

Then I bought the eevee card just because I was curious what all the different holo patterns looked like in real life but they only sent me two out of the 4(?) I ordered lol. I think these were “Starlight Flash” and “Oblique Flicker” Going to acetone one of each as well. There were a couple more holo patterns I really wanted to acetone but can’t find anymore.

The houndoom was just a random find that I was in love with because I actually really like seeing the art without the texture on it. I am immensely curious now if all the megas have this pretty painty art under them.

At some point in the future I want to customize some cards to be of my dogs, so I also do nab some cheap dog cards when I see them so I can paint over them once I feel ~qualified~ but so far I just don’t understand traditional paints :joy:

In any case, I have just gone and added “this card is fake” to the back of all of my fakes in case I die tomorrow and someone comes to sell my stuff. So hopefully that won’t be an issue.

I do not think fazool is “trippin” for pointing out what is potentially the biggest danger that “proxy” PSA cards bring to the hobby—they are widely used to fool people. You asked for a discussion, but the passive aggressive tone makes it seem like you just want people to agree with you.

“Proxy” cards are a problem for the hobby as they are often used to scam people out of money. When you start putting those “proxy” cards in PSA cases that look identical to the real thing, then I think we are getting in some murky territory on what is ethical. Maybe you have “good intentions” to never sell the card, but at least put some clear and visible indication on the replica label that says “proxy” or “not for sale” or something?

Personally, I think taking Tomokazu Komiya’s artwork, or any Pokémon illustrator’s, printing it and then selling it for my own financial gain is ethically wrong. It would be hurtful if someone was using my work, without asking, for financial gain (hi, LLMs), so I would not do the same to someone else. If you want to print a card at home to put on your shelf and not sell, then have at it.
