How are signatures graded by PSA?

I’ve seen a bunch of signed and graded cards on the market lately. What makes a signature a 10 vs authentic according to PSA? If the artist signed the card, shouldn’t they all be 10s or Authentic? This has been bothering me a lot of late. Thanks, everyone!

if it says authentic it was only graded on authenticity, not condition. The grade on the signature refers to the condition of the signature.

@swarm , I didn’t know that! Thank you. How are signatures themselves graded, then?

I would always opt to have a signature authenticated if it was signed on a Pokemon card. The only time I can see having a signature graded is in the sports world where cards come signed out of the pack.

yea I would agree, I don’t really see the need of a numerical grade.

If the sig figures to have no future value to you then authentic is fine. For future value, I’d rather buy a 10 than an authentic.

I’m a little confused here and I am not sure why I didn’t think about this, but they are grading the signature only, not that it’s authentic too? Or is it saying it’s authentic and that basically the ink of the signature is thick and clean or whatever. Can someone clarify this?

As with cards they will only assign a numerical grade once a card/sig is deemed to be authentic in their opinion. Authentication is always a prerequisite to grading.
