Hoenn Hoes

Spore, mach punch, drain punch, and bullet seed made breloom a total menace in the vgc! (Plus adding the technician ability made some of his moves way stronger!)

This reminds me that I don’t see much of the Clamperl/Gorebyss/Huntail line these days. I’m sure I’ve just missed them but I can’t remember seeing any cards for them in recent sets.

I guess it happens with so many 'mon these days, like how Bonsly finally got another card after so many years.

Metagross has got to be my favorite Gen 3 Pokemon and it solidified itself as a team fave ever since:

I think it was either 2022 or 2021 Illustration Contest. One of the finalists that never made it.

Metagross needs a proper alt art stat

And while they’re at it, go back and give him an e-reader too

I just wanted to hop in and say this thread has been a pleasure to read through. I started with Gen 3 and it remains my favorite to this day.

My first exposure to Pokemon was through the Burger King toy promotion and the anime. I had all of the Indigo League VHS tapes on repeat at home for years. It was not until the GBA SP came out that I got my first game in Pokemon Ruby. The game felt magical because I got to see a lot of the Pokemon from the TV on my GBA for the first time. This feeling would be even stronger for the later release Firered and Leafgreen. In Ruby I started with Treecko and proceeded to fail a lot trying to solo the game with a starter. Sadly my memories of my first adventure are foggy. I do remember some instant favorites eventually joining my team like Taillow, Aron, and Shroomish.

While I do not remember every detail of my first adventure I still feel immense love for the locations in Hoenn each time I play through the games. From the treetops of Foretree to the depths of the sea routes there is so much variety in the region.

Hoenn will always be a favorite of mine. I get excited to see a new TCG set come out with cards featuring Hoenn Pokemon. Paradox Rift is especially great with the Plusle and Minun AR cards or the Altaria SAR. Now here’s hoping for a Sceptile EX SAR someday.

Sadly we were too poor for us to afford a GB Advance so I never had the chance to play the original games. I did really enjoy Omega Ruby when that came to the 3DS though. One day I will go back and play the originals though.

Gotta say never cared about gen 3 but started playing Emerald in college and now Aggron is easily my top 3 favorite pokemon so yeah let’s pretend gen 3 barely exists.

For anyone out there who’s a Pokemon videogame junkie like me, Gen 3 has arguably one of the hardest National Pokedexes to complete. Need most if not all 7 games, including Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness. Trading between them, along with hacked event items to get the hidden legendaries like Deoxys, Jirachi & Mew.

Thanks to a birthday gift from my kid brother of a Gamecube action replay disk and some SD cards, I now own both those Gamecube games now which are impossible to find physical copies of for reasonable prices.

Complete pokedex is finally within reach for me…

I remember pulling that card when I was buying a lot of EX-R/S back in the day. Always loved the perspective, colours, and the cosmos holo. Beautiful card! The Midori Harada-illustrated Sceptile from the same set is another stunner.

I imagine the Sceptile must be a toughie to grade with all that silvery holo. Wish I’d kept the one I pulled (and the Swampert) but I (foolishly) got rid of all that gen of cards years ago.

This is the second time I’ve heard about the price of the Gamecube games. To be honest, I’d never noticed that there had been such a huge jump in prices. Colosseum sold loads and was never that expensive but now it’s £50-£100 here in the UK. XD is over £200 which is nuts.

Fortunately I bought them when they were new and still have both games in excellent condition. My Gamecube console itself is the Colosseum bundle pack so I also have the Box utility disc.

Ironically, I wasn’t impressed at all with XD back in the day. The game felt very lazy to me with all the recycling of concepts, locations etc. The game was obviously saved by being able to get Lugia, the Legendary Birds, and others that weren’t in the Gen 3 games and transfer them over.

I think the games have grown a lot in desirability over the years thanks to newer/younger gamers and Pokemon fans. By contrast, when I was buying them back in 2004/5, I was one of few people with a Gamecube buying these games and nobody else I knew cared (they were all about PS2). Colosseum definitely did better than XD though. XD came out in 2005 in the GCs last main year before the Wii and next-gen machines like the 360 and PS3 came out. Most of the Nintendo-published 1st party games from 2005 have much lower print runs and cost so much money today.

Obviously the small install base for the Gamecube and the low sales vs more popular games on PS2 means that there aren’t enough copies out there today for everybody that wants them.

I think the sceptile in ex R&S has potential to go the T17 route in price (and demand since it’s a starter rookie). It’s so hard to grade. Also not many people consider the fact that holos are just as hard to pull from the first 3 sets as ex’s. So it’s a tad harder to pull than expected. Also Nintendo eseries is not WOTC eseries when it comes to print quality it’s quite a bit worse.

@zorloth and I went half-half on an opened ruby box in COVID to open for fun. Correct me if I’m wrong but we didn’t get any 10s until we resubbed a few times. And they all looked clean
