Thank you! I know right, genuinely a dream shiny of mine in this gen

Unlucky! I’m also planning on taking on mt. Battle as well but purifying all 48 shadow pokemon sounds like the worst part. Still contemplating if ho-oh is worth it

Purifying all the Pokémon isn’t too bad. If I recall correctly, I think I farmed money in The Under Colosseum and used that money for scents in Agate.

I rechallenged Mt Battle and got Ho-Oh! Now I’ve got a complete national dex in LeafGreen and Sapphire!

A lot of planning and work went into getting everything across the 7 gen 3 games. It was a lot of fun but now I’m moving onto Gen 4.

Huge shoutout the previous owner of my Emerald cart for having Mew, Celebi, Jirachi and Deoxys.

Finding a used cart like that is the dream. Every one I’ve bought has just had half-baked new playthroughs abandoned after a few gyms.

I am close to a full Gen IV national 'dex on Diamond but I won’t do it as I have no way of getting Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Darkrai, Arceus, Shaymin…all those kind of Pokemon.

Don’t want to resort to hacks or these weird DNS tricks I keep seeing on Youtube/IG as I don’t want to risk bricking my game when it holds the results of 1000+ hours and about 20yrs of game time with my collection made up of everything I caught in Sapphire, Emerald, Firered, Colosseum, XD, and Diamond - all from files that were started when I bought each game on release

Makes me think about if there is a way to back up save files from DS carts just in case…is it possible?

I plan on doing the DNS trick eventually when I need the mystery gift pokemon. I don’t think it would brick your game since all you’re doing is connecting to somebody else’s server that’s handing out the mystery gift Pokemon. Maybe you could do it on another cartridge that doesn’t have anything you want to lose? My boss told me that he just did it on his copy of Platinum and he had no issues. I can’t blame you for not wanting to put all of that at risk though.

I’m sure there’s a way to back up DS save data, I just don’t know how it’s done.

I thought about that, didn’t know if trading them in from a different card might brick the other game though if it detects dodgy Pokemon? Seen stories of people getting hacked Pokemon from the GTS back in the day and their games getting soft-locked.

I know the DNS thing is different but I saw a few comments under the videos I watched where people were saying their games were crashing or other issues if it’s just while doing the trick on a different game card then no issues. I just don’t want to receive hacked Pokemon from somebody else’s server that messes up my game.

That’s fair! I don’t know enough about how that works but I’ll be looking more into it eventually. I’ll let you know what I find out so you can have more confidence in doing it yourself.

PSA about the DNS exploit. Wifi services are shutting down for the 3ds on April 9th this year. So I believe you have until then to use the exploit to get whatever you need.

DNS exploit is awesome, don’t want to miss out on the shiny johto dogs in hgss and shiny dialga/palkia/giratina/metagross in b2w2. Gen 4 was tricky due to the WPA/WPA2 requirement, ended up going to a local restaurant with my DS lol

Agreed the exploit is so cool. Lets you relive or experience for the first time such great events. Some of the event mons you can shiny hunt too, which for a shiny hunter like me is just fantastic.

Oh right! I completely forgot about that. Appreciate the heads up!

Mew, Celebi and Jirachi are still legitimately obtainable through Pokémon Ranch on the Wii, the Japanese Pokémon Colosseum pre-order bonus disc and the American Pokémon Colosseum pre-order bonus disc/PAL version of Pokémon channel.

Okay so I tried this DNS thing with Soul Silver but am not having any luck. I watched a guide which said that you need to use a mobile hotspot if using a 3DS which I am. I set the hotspot up, made sure the security on it was disabled, and changed the DNS code on the connection settings in the 3DS.

But my phone brings up a “tethering error has occured” message and auto switches the wifi functionality off. Any ideas?

EDIT: the new main problem is that switching my hotspot functionality on (android) disables the wifi every time. I have read that this is inevitable as there is only one radio signal or something (I’m no tech expert!) and so the wifi connection AND a hotspot can’t be active at the same time.

Maybe I’m going to have to try and grab a cheap, normal DS instead of messing about with all this crap.

So I decided to do the DNS exploit today and I’ve been doing it on my OG DS and it’s still working. I’m pretty sure Wi-Fi service for the original DS went offline a while ago. I’m wondering if it still works because we’re changing our DNS settings to connect to a non-Nintendo server

Oh yeah, I know about those. Unfortunately, a used copy of Channel here in the UK is about £70, the Celebi bonus disc looks to be in excess of £100 to get hold of, I no longer own a GBA to physically connect to my Gamecube, and Ranch is a WiiWare digital title and the Wii’s online side was closed down ages ago.

I want these event Pokemon but I’m not up for spending hundreds on various games and pieces of equipment. And I don’t even know how you’d get Ranch working on a Wii in 2024 (not that I have a Wii anymore either…got rid of it years ago).

If I can’t obtain them then it’s just one of those things unfortunately. I wish they just made them easier years later like when they put the Celebi event into the Gen 2 3DS eshop ports. It isnt as if exclusivity to old events matters anymore.

Hmm maybe that is the case. I just figured you still needed a wifi connection.

You still need a wifi connection. The service being turned off won’t disable your DS from being able to connect to Wi-Fi. You just won’t be able to connect to any of Nintendo’s servers since they’re being shut off. Im still going to do it now. Better safe than sorry!

Also, @UKLugia, I haven’t had any issues with the DNS stuff. I’m pretty sure your game treats them as official Pokemon because it doesn’t know that they’re coming from a non-Nintendo server. I’ve seen some people say they’ve even been able to transfer the Pokemon all the way up to Home without issue.

Ahh thanks for clearing that up!
