I use penny sleeves for my binder collection because they are cheapest and super clear. But they need to be trimmed to fit in the binder pages I use. Kind of annoying to have to do.
Recently I found some clear sleeves on some cards I purchased that remind me of regular standard sized sleeves with some rigidity, no ugly ultra pro Mark, and no matte back. Just clear.
Need help identifying them if anyone can. I also know there is another binder set collector here ( maybe @jonandek ? ) I saw using clear sleeves. Pictures provided below and open to similar suggestions.
By any chance are they dragon shield clear classic sleeves? I compared them to my ultra pro clear sleeves and they are slightly bigger than them, without any markings on them of course.
I use the ultra pro sleeves with the tiny circular mark on one side. Theyâre clear and semi-rigid so you can safely handle the cards if you want to pull them out and look at them
Iâve actually decided to stop using these recently for long-term storage. After pulling some cards out that have been sitting double sleeved for 5+ years, I found out that the circle was leaving an indent on the inner sleeve. Thankfully no damage to the card and I still highly doubt itâd actually damage the card in the end, but it was enough of an indent to make me feel like long term storage wasnât beneficial anymore.
Those arenât. I use them, and they have some minor differences with the one pictured. That said, Iâd highly recommend Dragon Shield clear classics to the OP. They are basically perfect for binder collecting, IMO.
This was my exact worry with those sleeves and itâs why I ended up getting Dragon Shield ones, which lack the symbol. There are Ultra Pro deck protectors without the circular mark, though: www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Protector-Sleeves-100ct/dp/B002GH2D8W
Never used them, so I canât vouch for their quality, though. I ended up going with Dragon Shield because theyâre what I use for MTG. And they are extemely durable and heavy gauge. But theyâre also somewhat more expensive and might be too thick for some binders.
WelpâŚguess who bulk bought clear upper deck sleeves and now has to change all to dragonshieldâŚ
Thanks for the heads up, I guess Iâll slowly start swapping out all my upper deck sleeves with dragon shields.
Note that I did check some of my cards stored in a binder with upper deck clear sleeves with the logo for maybe 2-3 years now, still looks good. Obviously I wonât take any risks though and slowly migrate away from all logo-less sleeves.
Do you use perfect fit inner sleeves with those? I started using the semi-rigid ultra pro sleeves but noticed itâs really easy to scratch up the holo with them.
I didnât. Havenât noticed any holo scratches. I also store the reverse holos from the e-series and early EX era in them and havenât noticed any issues
Here is a good thread by @jkanly but to give you my perspective, ultra pro (deck protector?) sleeves = KMC Super Series W version (without logo), Dragonshields may be similar but Iâve never tried those, I find the thickness of ultra pro & KMC W, tend to damage corners and donât prefer using them.
Iâve never tried KMC Hyper matte Clears
If you want penny sleeves that you donât have to cut anymore, similar strength/thickness but fits in binders youâd want the mayday games 'almost-a-penny" sleeves.
Iâm still looking for some clear sleeves that can fit in binders but are thicker than penny sleeves but thinner than ultra pros.
Dimensions are never advertised correctly, thatâs why its important for these threads, as the mayday sleeve dimensions are bigger than the ultra pro premium sleeves yet are smaller in reality.
Both the penny and Ultra Pro Premium Sleeves gets caught when inserting them into the âMonsterâ binder. everything else fits in smoothly.
Ultra Premium Sleeves is a tight fit on modern binders for me but works as @nickofturl has shown.
Thanks for the thorough responses everyone. I have my collection in penny sleeves as of now and from the looks - there are some options (love the âalmost a penny sleeveâ idea which is exactly what I was looking for when I found out pennies were too large for my sheets). I will always refuse to use ultra pro with the logo on it - too tacky and dont want to risk the indents (even if its unlikely).
Just hoping penny sleeves is good enough for long term storage with no damage. It would be expensive and time consuming to upgrade to the other options it looks like (relatively anyway).
