Yes. For a long time I thought I had to hold everything I have ever purchased and should only save up for new cards.
And then I remembered this is a trading card game.
I cannot afford to spend as much as I would like to on cards so making that sacrifice and selling cards to obtain cards I want more is worthwhile to me. As far as completely selling out? That would be tough but I would do it if the opportunity was important enough.
I’m in almost exactly the same position and age. As much as I like shiny cardboard, it’s a bigger goal to buy a house. I started selling a lot for a down payment. You’ll also have to keep in mind that your taxes will skyrocket the more you sell in a single year if you’re saving all you sell.
@dsteller, I sell cards if I have no attachment to them (which is few) and I have a set budget purely to buy items I BELIEVE are speculative. I use that money as my little nerd business to keep throwing back into the pot. Once I have enough, I use it to buy a card I’ve been wanting for my collection as I am someone who likes the feeling that I “earned it”.
Everyone will have a different view, so I would recommend writing your goals down before pulling the trigger.
Nope but I’m trying to get everything graded so if I wanted to liquidate for another opportunity or passion, I could. Pokemon is a lot of crypto. If you aren’t ready for some crazy blip in the market, you’re gonna be sitting on everything for a few years until the next cycle. Definitely enjoy and love looking through cards and displaying them more than looking at ledgers
I have but I always think about what about when I’m 60 and I can share these with kids and grandkids and nephews. Idk I think a great collection today is a greater collection tomorrow and I want to have these for the future.
I have not. It wouldn’t fetch anything high enough to warrant parting with it, plus I have years of memories with it and I don’t see any reason to move away from that. Selling some stuff is ok, but the whole thing, nah. It does no harm sitting in my closet and while I may have periods where I’m more interested/less interested in Pokémon, I wouldn’t ever part with it.
My collection isn’t worth much, but I’d sell if it was life changing money. I admire the non-sellers who have collections in the 5 - 6 figures and beyond. Takes balls and proves you aren’t shallow and materialistic.
I can’t see me ever doing it. If I really needed the extra money, I’d go work more jobs or do just about anything else to get by. I’ve loved collectibles since I was a child and it’s just one of my natural interests overall and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. It can be an expensive hobby at times for sure, but at the same time it does a lot for me so it feels worth it. Just seeing my collection tends to improve my mood since it takes me back to a better time or at least makes me think of those times. Might seem silly to some people but for me it’s one of those experiences and attachments I’ve had for a long time and I just want to continue building on it.
I’m faced with a similar predicament where selling my collection would really help with starting to look at buying a house, but so far I don’t think it’s something I can do. I had already cut items I found to be superfluous to chase collection goals and liquidated a couple big ticket items to help pay for my wedding - but I think the rest of my collection is with me for the long haul
