Thanks for the info–hope it doesn’t hurt your chances at finding the six swirl you’re hunting! (I’ll keep a lookout for you too)
That Entei is gorgeous though, and it looks like you need to have almost perfect placement of the holo sheets to get the six to be visible, as you’re pretty much hitting all the corners on the holo.
For a 4 or 6 swirl it is always important to have a good swirl position at the top of the card because when those swirls are lowered a bit one of the top two will be placed behind the artwork box so you won’t see one of those swirls. Even when you have a 6 swirl with the close swirls, the placing of the top ones are most important.
When I put my JP and ENG promo enteis side by side I noticed the english cards have a smaller artwork box. I assume this is because the Wotc cards have bigger borders so when getting a placing for a 4 swirl card, it’s easyer with english cards instead of japanese.
I tried to come up with ideas because I learned that the JP cards have larger artwork boxes to come up with some good swirl placements but it’s not easy. Because of the holo pattern you can get two partial orbs on a card just like my feraligatr (see my collection thread) while it’s not really possible with english cards. For E-series you can get the two swirls and also the two orbs because there the artwork box is even larger. (I also have examples of this in my thread)
Might have sidetracked a bit because I love the topic on swirl placements. Small changes in card design can really open up ideas for this which is why I really tried to find small details like this. ^^
Really neat info about the art boxes and what’s possible because of different card designs! I’ll have to go through the full thread at some point (I know there’s a lot of great info earlier on in the thread) and will also take a peek at your collection thread
This swirl thing has also caught my interest for the time being!
Okay, I’ve gone through the whole thread now, so I’m fully caught up! The cards here look amazing (the close double swirls and close double globes). The 1st editions are out of my price range (especially the slabs), and I’d rather stay focused on my main collection goals for now. So unless I stumble upon a somewhat cheap one, I won’t be a competitor But it’s still fun to contribute!
Here’s an interesting one I found yesterday browsing Mercari after @pinn033 said he was hunting for a winner’s promo Hitmonchan. This one is already sold, but it has an offset close double swirl (pretty much all that we’ve posted here are aligned vertically or horizontally). I think there was only one other instance of this somewhere earlier in the thread, but it didn’t garner much discussion. The horizontal weld line is also evident here.
I’m actually looking for the regular Hitmonchan but thanks for watching. In the EU it’s harder to find these winner stamp cards.
The rocket’s Hitmonchan is actually really cool, I don’t think I have seen an offset double swirl like this. I wonder how this happened although I might have an idea. Anyways great find
Saw it the other day and had to do a double take lol (no pun intended). Also, on the OP I see the Feraligatr 4 under the 1st edition list. Is there a picture of that one?
That must be a mistake. We’ve seen 4/111 on the Unlimited copies for sure, but not 1st Edition to my knowledge. I’ll correct the OP - thanks for looking so closely!
no worries! A little off topic, but its odd that each Neo genesis starter has a copy with two swirls besides Meganium. I’ll always be bummed about that lol.
Agreed with @smokemon. If the two were printed side-by-side, it would be reasonable for a double swirl to only occur on one and not the other. That said, we have found T17 and T18 swirls, so it is possible that we’ll find them for Feraligatr and Meganium.
This thread is really cool. I was expecting it be like the god tier orbs thread with posting of sick swirls, which it is, but there is also posts detailing when cards hit the market, talking about prices, and documenting these cool niche holos. Its fun to see.
sorry didnt mean to direct reply. this was posted in the thread a few weeks ago so was just guessing thats what had happened lol. Thanks for sharing though!
