Hello guys,
This is the Wizard, what a good feeling to start getting back into my childhood hobby. One of my best hobbies. I am so new again to this I can not even remember what cards I had and all the new ones that came out. Cant wait to learn a lot.
My goal:
To start collecting all my cards I had that I remember taking everywhere, from my grandmas house to school, across the country etc. I would never let go of my cool ass binder. Too bad it stayed inside my parents house when it burned down I remember telling my dad, that if he could as the fire fighter to get me my binder now with a little extra pocket change now I want to start collecting them and one day give them to my future grandsons. Tell them my cool ass journey I was on to collect these cards.
My questions:
Where do I start guys?
I already read what cards i want to get the 1st gen is my priority, all holo’s if possible. Which ones would you recommend that must be a must have ?
Is there a list of must haves in your collection? and no I am not doing it for a profit, yes i saw gary vee talking a lot about these but thats not my goal.
Which ones are still sleepers right now that will be very desired in the future ?
Any recommendations?
Should I focus on buying english language only ? or are other languages ok as well?
Welcome back to the hobby sorry to hear about the fire, that sucks man!
You start where you want and you collect what you want, so you said 1st gen is your priority, so now decide on what you want to do - master the sets (get every card), collect just the holos, buy graded versions to display or buy items to fill a binder. Decide what language you also want to tackle - for me it’s English only.
Everyone has their own goals, and the start of the journey is to choose yours (at least your initial one!).
Not sure about your market question as that immediately follows you saying you’re not doing it for profit. Buy what you like, buy what makes you happy, the minute you turn it into a money chase is when it stops being collecting for fun.
I will start by agreeing that you should buy and collect what you want and like. The beautiful thing about this hobby is that it can be different for everyone. For me, I started by collecting the cards I had as a kid and completing my binder of Base set. Then moved on to finish Base through to the end of the Neo sets since those were the last sets I personally had any experience with at the start. Now I am focussing on 1st edition sets but that is just what I like.
My only advice really is to buy what you like without getting yourself into financial difficulty. This community is a fantastic well of knowledge and opinions and advice and I hope you enjoy your Pokemon journey.
If you’re genuinely interested you don’t need to be told what to buy and you wouldn’t care about what cards will be very desired in the future. Just buy what you like the look of, if you like Gen 1 then base set up to gym challenge would be your best bet. If you’re also here to “invest” that’s fine too, many people do both. With that said, welcome and good luck
I’d recommend that you start with a binder collection. It’s relatively easy/cheap and you can get to know the hobby again while having tons of fun. A lot of bang per buck so to speak.
Since you mention Gen 1, I think Base set, Jungle and Fossil are perfect to start with. Beware that prices have been going crazy lately and Base set may not be that cheap anymore.
Here are lists and photos of all sets, I think you’ll find it helpful :
So sorry you lost them in a fire, that’s rough man. In either case, it sounds like you have some idea of what you had before so the Wizards of the Coast cards seem to be your first priority. I would use the link @nevyn provided to see where you want to set your goals. The older and 1st edition sets are the hardest to get right now for some of the WOTC cards so you might want to start there.
What cards do you remember having off the top of your head?
