Fake Shadowless Charizard?

This has already been a thing, it’s just never been a widely enough used scam to make a serious impact on things.

It’s one of the reasons I’m anxiously awaiting for PSA to implement NFC technology for future cases.

This is from the President of Collector’s Universe (PSA parent company), Joe Orlando, back in February:

"Keeping up with fraudsters who try to deceive collectors is a constant concern for grading companies. PSA says it will soon unveil a new piece of technology aimed at stopping at least some of that.

“A security chip, otherwise known as NFC or Near-field communication technology, will be embedded into some of our products, so collectors and dealers can verify the product has, in fact, been certified by our Company,” Orlando revealed.

“By simply touching our certified product with a current smart phone, a verification link will instantaneously appear on the screen. The link will provide the exact information of the certified collectible in our database. The embedded security adds a new level of sophistication to the validation process and next-level protection for our certified products. PCGS (the coin grading division of Collectors Universe) has already announced the addition of this new technology and PSA will be doing the same in the coming weeks.”

In a perfect world we would get the chip inside the most common card cases and pay minimally more per card for grading, but Joe only states that “some of our products” will receive it, which leaves us guessing.

My initial thought in relation to that is that PSA would likely have an up-charge if you want this NFC technology integrated in your PSA case. So it’s something you may want to pay for with your more expensive cards but not necessarily on everything. We’ll see.

In a perfect world we would get the chip inside the most common card cases and pay minimally more per card for grading, but Joe only states that “some of our products” will receive it, which leaves us guessing.

That would be a dream come true. If it were optional security though it could look bad for them… like buying a car with optional safety belts. I for one would always buy the option with safety belts (NFC chip). It’d be a big step forward either way.

Absolutely.

It’s one of the reasons I’ve held off on getting anything re-cased. I’m waiting for the next level of PSA cases to become available first. Even if I have to wait another couple of years, that’s fine.

They both look real to me I have several shadowless Zards with different shades of red

It’s probably from a batch of different factory settings. I’ve seen this in pokemon cards and other trading cards as well. Could also be UV damage from sunlight exposure. But from the looks of it, I doubt either one of them are fake.

I’m almost certain they’re both legit. I think the more saturated one is sometimes referred to as a “Ruby”.

Hopefully whatever the final solution is it’s well done as i know its possible to clone NFC tag’s (even with protection most can be bruteforced) and copy them to a blank which is usually inexpensive, However this method would require the scammer to psychically own the card to replicate it which would make it a lot more difficult (but still not impossile - possible purchase/receive/copy nfc/return the card could be an issue)
If it’s poorly done you may even just be able to rip the file from any card and alter the cert number to display any link you want.
Just speculation at the moment though, Personally I don’t think fakes will ever get ‘that’ good though
