I just reckon these are fun novelty replicas. Surely nobody who is in the market for an illustrator card is getting duped…!
I think fakes of more attainable cards, and passing them off as real, is actually worse than this. To me it’s like a replica World Cup or sth. Don’t burn me.
These are listed as fakes aren’t they? Or was one of the links trying to actually con? They’ve been removed so I can’t see them. Anyway, whoever actually buys a 20 USD card thinking its a legit piece is a muppet.
The problem with fakes circulating is that it isn’t a single transaction and done. It only takes one slip into less educated or more malicious hands.
Not to mention it’s just blatantly illegal. It’s not like they got formal permission to produce replicas and engaged in a profit sharing venture. They stole copyrighted materials and are peddling them for a personal gain.
Aye fair enough. Fakes are fakes. I’m not condoning them, just didn’t think these were worth fussing over. Pretty sure they’re a cut out print overlayed on another holo. No chance of looking even remotely legit!
I list items all the time with descriptions saying, and photos showing a theme deck exclusive non holo variant of a normally holo card. People STILL buy the card and get all pissed off when it comes and is non holo.
“Is this a fake”
“This was supposed to be holo!”
etc.
Many eBayers don’t read the description or look at the photo. Many buy the title. There are more “muppets” out there than you or I would probably like to know, I am sure.
I guess that is what people who illegally produce fake iphones, purses or other items should say, “they are just a fun novelty”.
The issue with this card is two fold. One, they could be re-sold to someone as the real thing. Two, if someone is on the market for an authentic example, which some members here are, they will have less of chance finding an ungraded copy. Basically, these fakes are single-handedly destroying the chance for an ungraded copy on ebay. In fact, if it keeps up, it might get put on the ebay list where you need to have the card graded to sell. There are notable cards that are commonly forged due to their value, and they require a third party encapsulation if you want to list them on ebay.
Basically, since pokemon flies under the radar, the legality is not “worth” perusing. However, that does not take away from its illegality. Calling it a novelty is only possible because of the price point. If anything, this fake illustrator situation is a great textbook ethical dilemma, breaking a law, but goes unnoticed, is it still illegal?
having personally bought one of these cards at the cheapest price to destroy for a video I can tell you they are of horrible quality and are the most obviously fake things there are.
not that I don’t seem them as a counterfeit item, and just as illegal and bad for the hobby as most people here I obviously burned the one I got for comedic effect. Just noting that at their current capacity they aren’t even close to a real pokemon card.
supporting these practices though could lead to them working much harder to make more realistic ones though, and then we have a much bigger problem on our hands
I’m guessing you purchased that for your pikachu collection, and that makes a lot more sense to me as it is a huge amount of money that almost none of us have to get a real one.
even so, that is actually the exact one from these ebay listings. it is the same card from all the fake listings on ebay. I’m quite sure at this point that they are being mass produced
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrwFMgEy4Kw here is someone on youtube pretending that they have 6 of them (and mistakenly claiming that there are only 7 in existance
imgur.com/VnrgvLL here is the one that you have. while this is a nice photo it is actually the exact one that is being mass produced.
the way you can tell is the holo. I noticed when I burned the card and the front printed part came off that it is just some sequin like things on a sheet of paper.
it is very abundantly clear when you are actually holding the card.
if @smpratte would grace us with a picture of the real deal you can look at the holo and immediately know something is very wrong with the fakes.
now I in no means want to take away with you enjoying the one you have justin, I’m glad you do. but it is definitely the same one that is being mass produced
I think I either misunderstood your post or you misunderstood mine - I definitely am aware my copy (including the reverse holo one) are probably from this same production group. I was stating more in response to your comment about it being the most obviously fake card out there (which I interpreted you meant in general, not specifically of the Illustrator) and was just mentioning the other fake cards I have which were clearly more obvious haha.
and I feel like it’s worth mentioning because I don’t want people to pounce on me for having one - I bought a lot of Pikachu cards from someone for a pretty hefty price and they offered the 3 fake cards you see at the bottom of my fakes collection page in addition to the lot so I figured why not. I didn’t purchase them directly nor do I really place any value in them in my collection. I just think they make an interesting addition to the fake cards I already had.
