Ex era - such an awful era of cards. Everyone left the hobby because of these cards.

The hobby was at its lowest in 02-03. Legendary Collection and the e-series were generally seen as ugly cards at the time - ugly fireworks holo and ugly wide yellow borders. In the four years of the ex era, the hobby grew gradually each year in terms of tournament attendance and online forum participation. Not as many people collected, but it was the golden age of gameplay and strategy.

From the little exposure I had on the Pokemon TCG as a child, this seems to be true. I remember class mates having old-school wotc cards and I remember class mates having Pokemon ex. I don’t remember anyone having e-series or LC cards. I also don’t remember anyone collecting Gen IV and Gen V cards, so the ex era was one of the hobby’s high points in my opinion

You are located in Germany as well, right? All the game stores I went to as a child didn´t carry LC as english cards just didn´t sell that well back in the day. Funnily enough, both Gym expansions were sold in my local game stores though as we loved the trainers on the cards. Fun times!

And I definitely agree, E-Series was an absolute low point, I still remember opening my first pack of aquapolis together with some friends and we didn´t like the border at all, didn´t help that the actual e-reader was never sold over here. EX picked up a bit of steam again but as we grew older things like skating and girls were much cooler

@shadowless, yeah, stupid teenage priorities be damned. But tbh I was surprised that the early ex Pokemon with their CGI artwork were as popular as they were. Personally I wasn’t impressed. The turning point was the introduction of Delta Species that spiked my interest. But right before getting into it, the age of “Pokemon is for babies” started, I saw my childhood friend/crush choosing her first boyfriend (5 years older, had his own car, athlete) over me and so I quit card games out of frustration cause I just wanted to grow up asap. Still hurts today lol

It makes me happy to see Legend Maker mentioned so many times in this thread already. EX Deoxys is my personal highlight from gen 3 sets but LM reverse holos look so good together.

Legend Maker is my favourite too. Opened a lot of it looking for the Regi stars, so i’ve got a fair chunk of the rev set completed. They look like regular holo cards with that beautiful foil pattern. Really like Unseen Forces too. So weird that they’re all still as cheap as they are. Actually, maybe delete this thread…

The HL-LM are in a league of their own entirely. I’m not a fan of the oilspill-versions used throughout Delta and Power Keepers. I think I actually prefer having the stamp, which is not something you’ll hear me say often, but I feel like the stamp puts some distance between the reverses and the regular holos.

As for the Delta sets, this card from CG is probably in my top 15 cards of all time:
