I’ve recently got back into collecting, and i really do enjoy the Evolutions set. I know that holding onto a CP6/English Evolutions booster box is a good investment, but I’m wondering if completing the Evolutions master set is a good investment?
I’ve seen the master set go for around $250-$300. For all of you more experienced collectors, do you see Evolutions master set going up in price in the future? Is Evolutions a better investment than Sun and Moon?
That’s a tough call. And not one that anyone can answer fully at this point I think. Evolutions is a pretty easy set (in comparison to Sun and Moon) to complete. But there are a lot more collectible/ desirable long term cards in Evolutions. I think there are a lot (a lot a lot) of people hanging onto boxes and completing the Evolutions set. I think long term it will increase in value but not be the smash hit many people thought it was going to be. If you look at every set that is out of print you can’t find a booster box for less than $200. So that’s your baseline (once it’s out of print). Comparing it to Sun and Moon isn’t really a fair comparison in terms of baseline value. Evo is around $250 while Sun and Moon shouldn’t ever be below $500 for a Master Set. So have to consider that as well.
Master set as in every promo, Prerelease, Reverse Holo and Staff cards included maybe. Just a regular set? Ehh… probably not. Let’s wait and see which S&M Set has the best Chase cards.
Please excuse my noobness and being slightly off topic but what are “chase cards” not the first time I’ve heard of them referred to just don’t know what they are.
Now to be more on topic, I agree with scratchdesk and his comment. I think it’s gonna be just another set in the bunch nothing too special, I myself have a master set but I have it because that’s what I like doing, having complete sets. I don’t think it would be worth the time or effort to build multiples to invest.
I wouldn’t consider trophies part of a master set ever. With stamped worlds promos, for example, I don’t know anyone that needs them all to feel like they have a master set. Usually they just consider the participants version or whatever is unstamped.
Yeah, for my definition of Master Set I don’t count any of the promotional/ stamped promo cards. Just the cards that could be found in a retail environment in some form or another. There are 3 versions of the League DCE that I’m aware of, and I have been unsuccessful in buying any of them so far. What would a set be called with all of the stamped promos and all cards that exist? Super Master Set Supremo!
I think it’s just too exclusive at that point, especially if you include cards that there are only a small handful of copies of or were never offered in your territory.
