Well this is terrible
Disappointed they did not go the alt route. As long as one item with extended bidding enabled gets a bid, they should refresh the timer on all other items.
The way I see it, I will treat ebay like any other auction house such as fanatics. It feels like i haven’t won an auction on ebay in ages, so we’ll see how things go.
seems like the biggest troll bid system anyone could ever think of esp since theyve got like 5 dolla cards in the same auction as 500k cards ![]()
I love the opportunities of the modern market. But I also hate this.
Random screwdriver from Molvania gets a bid. Now every single Pogeyman card on the platform extended again.
This is similar to casinos pushing out 3/2 in favor of 6/5 blackjack. You will still play but they get to squeeze out a higher percentage from you, so long as those decision doesn’t impact bidding. I think they will go back on this, eBay is for high research effort and low transaction effort.
They could just introduce a better product and title indexing system so that if you search “Pokemon base” vs “base Pokemon” you won’t get two drastically different results allowing organic bids to better find their home. They must have garbage devs that don’t understand terms indexing and someone suggested extended bidding instead with napkin math.
They have been testing this since August 2025 and I have yet to run into an auction with it. I wonder if it’s really not that popular lol
Genuinely who asked for this.
I actually like this and I hope I get to spend an unplanned extra 261 minutes of my day bidding on an obscure Zapdos and I actually like this and I think my family will appreciate me taking time away from them to spend an extra 261 minutes bidding on a Zapdos:)
More and more sites seem to want to compete for your time
Pokemon Center -Sit in online queue
Walmart -Sit in online queue
PWCC/Fanatics -Extended bidding
I understand retail sites trying to stop bots, but it still is a time suck. Now eBay =(…Like others have mentioned, I loved the fact you could set your price into Gixen and forget it. Even if your manually bidding, its at least known that the bidding will END at the certain point.
For someone on the East Coast with an early morning work start time on Monday, its even challenging for me to stay up for Fanatics auctions.
You gotta think of the shareholders. And the SVA this adds for them
That might be it - could ebay be trying to both get people to actively bid more and stop using 3rd party services like Gixen?
Judging by this thread maybe I should post this in the unpopular opinion thread lol. But I think extended bidding on eBay won’t be that bad >_>?
First, if you’re super rational you should continue to bid up to 100% of your willingness to pay. An auction extending for 60 seconds shouldn’t impact this in theory.
Second, if you’re not 100% rational all the time (and sure, most of us aren’t all the time), you might make up lost sniped wins with more opportunities to win listings that would have been sniped away from you for $1 more last second. (Or you’re a seller and will just have better results on eBay). So I dunno, auction results might end up a little higher overall (I mean seems obvious that is eBay’s hope), but it could end up being a wash for many.
Third, I don’t think it will be a huge time sink… or at least I hope it won’t: I think eBay will eventually find its way towards a system like most other platforms where the time increments get shorter and shorter until there is a hard cap.
Finally, I also think the whole need to use sniping services with eBay to truly maximize your odds is kind of silly. Think many normal folks would prefer not to have to deal with this.
I dont think its necessarily to maximize the odds at winning. I think gixen is more of a tool for people to not forget to bid without worrying about getting shill bid up and/or control that impulse of letting an exciting auction lead to an irrational decision. At least thats my reasoning.
It doesnt work like that you cant bid yourself up on the same account. Multiple accounts yes but not what your referring to
What it means when you see same person with higher bid is that they placed a max bid and another bidder came in with a bid below that
So packyman lists max bid of $800 on an item currently $300
Bidder 1 bids $400 and bidder 2 bids $450
What you will see is packyman bid $405 and packyman bid again for $455
Fair points!
Re: scheduling… nothing worse than just completely forgetting to bid on smth haha. It’s slightly off-topic, but your point about scheduling is why I think the regular weekly scheduled auction formats at other platforms seemed to have done so well and is a better model than eBay. It’s nice just to know there’s one time you have to pay attention to things.
Re: shill bidding… yeah, good point. In a weird way, I think extended bidding could help? Because it seems less likely someone will try to shill with one minute left vs shilling all throughout the lifespan of an auction to build hype? I am probably being too optimistic
.
I lol’d here at work and now cannot unsee this and will show everyone I can this picture today.
I agree with this a lot. I enjoy that I can view Fanatics whenever I have time during the week and know what catches my eye/when I need to be online to bid. I selfishly wise it was a tad earlier than 10PM EST for Monday work purposes…but I do like the known fact of needing to look just once during the week for items that catch my eye.
Shill bidding might still be the same problem (potentially)…if someone has a few accounts and just bid it up before the auction is close to closing? I’m not sure…I’m sure eBay has its analytics that show the extended bidding is “better” for there bottom line.
Man that really sucks, this was the main pro of eBay vs the other marketplaces. I just wrote this on Sunday… Life comes at you fast ![]()
“eBay auctions end at the scheduled auction close, with no extensions. This means that the majority of bidding is done in the final 60 seconds of an auction, which frequently means that the auction winner is determined by multiple bidders submitting competing maximum bids in the final 5-10 seconds of an auction… Fanatics, Goldin, & Heritage have extended bidding where anyone who participated in pre-close bidding can continue bidding for 30+ minutes after the auction closes.”
