E4's Favorite Mew - Results

I hearted your first comment because I thought you were saying it should be first  What’s your problem with Expedition Mew?

I love how it looks like an actual pocket monster or animal. Like it might bite you if you get too close. It stands apart from the softer more anthropomorphic style Mew’s always drawn in now, while still being cute.

A few of the others have that too, but Expedition’s my favorite among them.

In short, it looks too fleshy. I don’t dislike it, and in person the holo version especially looks good, but there are a dozen cards that look better to me.

It’s not even the best artwork for that card :fire:

I used to LOVE Expedition Mew. But over the years, I’ve stared at it so many times… and it’s changed a bit in my head. I dislike the “rubberiness” of Mew’s tail and feet. Maybe the shading was too exaggerated for my liking.

100% this! I appreciate it from the anatomical drawing/wild animal sketch angle (kind of like the Pokemon Researcher merch below), but I definitely don’t think it’s beautiful.

Legend maker Holo not making it is a disgrace. So much disrespect to ex era Holo rares

There is definitely a graphic element to both the Kusajima e-readers. He’s really leaning into it with the translucent, wet looking skin at the extremities and tail. And with the Mcdonalds it almost looks like he’s mimicking the textures of 3D/4D ultrasound pictures.

I’m ready for Lugia. Next please.

The CGI Mew ex in fifth is an example of nostalgia clouding perception.

Looks godawful. Probably the worst of all 25 and perhaps even lower, but the other art is all gone.

@inertgeometry is it possible to leave the cards and results as we progress through the polls?

Now THAT is an unpopular opinion I reckon!

How is it nostalgia anyway, practically none of us had (seen) that Mew ex as kids because it was a Japanese exclusive players promo?

The PLAY promo cards have been popular for years now right? At least a decade?

I mean, people have nostalgia for living during covid (not with covid, lol) so I don’t think it necessarily means you need to be a kid to have nostalgia for something made later.

If our perceptions are influenced by nostalgia, that is to say we appreciate a piece of artwork more because we connect with it. How does that in any way reduce the art’s credibility? Everyone relates to art differently, CGI or otherwise, there’s so much more to it than the number of hours that’s gone into a given piece.

yeah i could do that. i just figured it would make the original post longer than it needed to be, but i can see the merit in leaving everything up

ancient mew placing high is all the proof you need that nostalgia plays a big part. to say it is one of the best is laughable. its a hieroglyph. if it wasn’t such an iconic card, i’d be surprised if it even made the top 25

I doubt too many people have nostalgia from their childhood for a Japanese exclusive unless you grew up hunting them or are from there. I think it’s up there for it’s scarcity

Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t return to collect Pokémon until the PoGo boom, which is less than a decade ago. I don’t want to equate myself to all of E4, but who of us was even actively collecting Pokémon cards in let’s say 2013, moreover collecting Japanese cards, moreover collecting exclusive mid-period promo’s, I bet we can count them on our fingers. It’s a niche of a niche of a niche.

If anyone feels nostalgia for this Mew ex, please prove me wrong!

I think it’s simply a quite beautiful card, the CGI is done extremely well here, and doesn’t feel tacky at all. It’s a reasonably low pop card (but punching well above it’s weight on that front fwiw), with a cool way of obtaining it. A lot of collectors resonate with those things.

Mew ex is exactly what I think when I remember Mew in pokemon snap 64. Its better quality and doesnt even look the same but it has the same feeling for me when I look at it. Mew in an energy bubble floating through space, I doubt im the only one who thinks about it like that but for me that is what is nostalgic about it.

So you have nostalgia for Pokémon snap 64, maybe specifically encountering Mew in that game. You don’t have nostalgia for Mew ex, it’s simply the trigger for your nostalgia for something else  . I can definitely see how it can trigger nostalgic feelings, take for instance CD-Charizard - I bet that card has the same effect on people who’ve never even seen it before.

Given that PLAY promo’s as a whole and their specific popularity were mentioned, I don’t think this is the kind of nostalgia clouding our judgement that was meant in the first place though.

Correct but depending on how strong the nostalgia is, it can bring significant meaning to what triggers it. The survey is about favorite cards and if it is linked with another great moment then it can of course be a favorite in its own right linked to wonderful times.

As for nostalgia for the card itself and only that aspect of it, I agree with you that unless someone already has the card as a favorite or a goal, it likely wouldnt be nostalgic itself for a majority.
