Seeing all of the artwork here is a pallete cleanser. I knew Gyarados was varied artwise but seeing all of the single original arts is a really pleasant experience.

giovanni’s gyarados getting no love is a travesty that is solid #2 for me behind the og base set. misty’s is nothing compared to giovanni’s, having space is important and showing gyarados in his natural habitat deep under the sea. shining is defintely overrated as others have said i agree

it, like many from this era, is just a generic sugmori artwork spliced onto a generic background. no reason it should be favored too high among so many others on this list

Both TOKIYA Gyarados are my favorites besides Shining so I’m not surprised.

giovanni’s gyarados and misty’s gyarados are the original and blue artworks respectively. the reasons why those artworks are so favored is because they are incredibly nostalgic, iconic, and significantly important to gyarados’ design. it’s a lot easier to focus on the background when you don’t have to imagine and execute the concept of the creature yourself.

yeah i made a post at the beginning of the new year mentioning that i am going to do them differently from now on. i think this method of less restrictions gives a better idea of which cards are liked the most overall
