Gen 8 I made a decent amount of mistakes in games, ended up not faring well. That’s a paying attention issue. Gen 9 I fundamentally don’t understand how to use all of the tools as evidenced by my G1 with @garret_phung. No offense to him but bolt v amoon shouldve been be a clean win con for me. Can’t believe I’m looking forward to M-A

Gen 9 is easily the most mechanically intensive, with tera having a high skill ceiling and a large majority of the new Pokemon being meta-relevant. There are interactions I still miss, such as forgetting my Landorus had Tera Poison’d, therefore removing its flying type and thus allowing it to avoid priority under Psychic Terrain. Stuff like that comes from experience.
Having never played it, the format does feel extremely overwhelming to a newcomer. Hence why I joke about the King Slayer badge being given out like candy since I’m going from the Gen of VGC I’m most familiar with (Gen 8) to unchartered waters.
Also, we will likely be in Reg M-C or M-D by the time we do Champions. I’ll make sure it aligns perfectly with the official format so people have an active ladder on showdown/cart to practice with.

Don’t beat yourself up too much over it. VGC is a learning experience! You’ll get better over the years the more you play. That’s what I’m working on personally. Would love to make Day 2 or qualify for Worlds someday.

Oh I’m not beating myself up I just used it as a case example. I consider myself decent at understanding the meta(s) even if i dont play a ton. But you miss things. Like it would never have occured to me to self inflict status, but having seen it, it makes complete sense. Or I’m thinking of when a player (Wolfe, maybe?) said they were bringing Dondozo to a regional and everyone was like lol 1v2 and then it was Dondozo paired with Wo-chien for infinte recovery.
The self status inflict is definitely something that I wouldn’t expect to be ordinary. Most people try to thug out the sleep, or just position their mons to pressure Amoonguss from landing Spore. Since RB was already going to set up, it didn’t make sense for me to switch out to avoid Spore pressure, so I opted to self inflict to avoid wasting my stat boosts. I think niche tech moves like those happen rarely depending on the board state too. Like unless you made the team with the tech in mind, the realization probably won’t hit you until you get a full grasp of the situation when strategizing during team preview or during the turn.

Idky, but Throat Chop sounds way more violent than other attacks I saw. Then I saw that it instantly killed Misdrevous and I was like bruh lol

Just played my singles set vs @ddk and i won 2-1. Its the first ever time i even took a game off him in singles, alli needed was a team i new very well, a gen he didnt know and a team he didnt know and he still took a game. (IG that speaks to how good he is in singles)

ggs, very well played! I do think your VGC experience and knowledge of all the wacky Gen 9 mons helped a lot. I had no idea what to bring or how to play around some of these cores.

GGs and thanks to Darth for fitting in the match around their schedule, and apologies on my part for the difficulty with time alignment.
Close set thanks to Kyurem and Darkrai-- both super scary and difficult to deal with. Had to rely on nuzzle in G2, and although I was primarily wanting the para slow for Kyurem to outspeed, the paralysis procs were certaintly welcomed. Tera certainly won’t be missed moving into Champs format
