Sorry abt that, Ruins of Alph Spotlight Ladders do that. They come and go. However VGC 2013 is still in the teambuilder as a challengeable format.

Hi everyone, sign ups for both tournaments are now closed. Thank you to everyone who has signed up.

I will work on generating the singles bracket later today so that can start.

For VGC 2013, please DM me your team by Sunday, February 9. I will only be able start the bracket once I have received everyone’s team.

Hi everyone, the live bracket for Gen 5 OU Singles is now up! Please ignore that I had to remake bracket because I forgot to add @mrbubbles

Here are the matches for the first round:
@DarthEevee vs @lyleberr
@Tryson21 vs @amcgl58
@Soda_Eesti vs @Frosty.Puppy
@mrbubbles vs @rtas
@pfm vs @OldaleTownTrainer

*@wisewailmer @cosrob @ddk received a first round bye

Please schedule your matches in a timely manner and remember to post replays in this thread for all your games.

For those curious, here is how seeding was done:

How Bracket Was Seeded

Players were grouped into 3 tiers (experienced, intermediate, beginner) based on past tournament performance or relevant competitive Pokemon experience. The tiers were as follows:

Tier 1
DDK
wisewailmer
cosrob
Tryson 21

Tier 2
pfm
Soda_Eesti
DarthEevee
mrbubbles

Tier 3
amcgl58
OldaleTownTrainer
lyleberr
Frosty.Puppy
rtas

Players within each tier were randomly shuffled among themselves to determine their seed. The players in Tier 1 would always end up being seeds 1-4, players in Tier 2 seeds 5-8 and players in Tier 3 seeds 9-13.

Good luck and have fun, Singles players!

VGC Players, don’t forget to submit your teams to me so we can start bracket!

Id like to mention how unfair it is that the better players get the easier route. Imo the worst players should get the easiest route but not my tournament so you do you.

Edit: Also considering the fact this tournament didnt have a swiss prior the “seeds” are extremely subjective so its just giving 3 players easier routes based on speculation.

I mean that is how seeding works in most tournaments, even if there is no prior round (tennis tournaments for example). Plus this is based on prior tournament results with most of the same players.

As well, the idea is to get everyone to play as many games as possible, and preferably as close as possible. Pairing someone who has never played with ddk would be a big difference in skill gap.

I considered why the experienced players got to be challenged less in the brackets when i saw the lineup but i figured the games are usually days if not weeks apart so there isnt benefit or detriment of having more games back to back. Fair or not, if i wanted to win and go further then being good is the only way.

Im also here to enjoy some lighthearted gaming and from experience once you get knocked out for good it becomes a bit boring to follow, so a greater chance to continue to more games before that happens is always welcome from me since several of us more casual players have no interest in breaking down the exact mechanics of the game to find the undefeatable perfect team.

Cant help it if ddk is too scared of me to play.

The way I’ve gone about seeding is nothing revolutionary. If you’ve ever watched competitive fighting games, they use a very similar system where the best players are given the highest seeds. In the case of an imperfect number of entrants, the highest seeds will often get a “bye” past the first round. The idea behind this is both to have fairer matchups and to reduce randomness affecting the outcome of the bracket. If the two best players met in the first round, one would inevitably get sent to losers early, therby affecting matches down there. Conversely, why do you feel a weaker player should be given a free pass and an easy path to grand finals?

Before I started running these brackets on E4 seeding was done randomly or players were seeded in the order they signed up for the tournament in. It wasn’t exactly conductive for a competitive bracket in my mind. I don’t think my system is perfect either (I agree Swiss would be nice but it would drag the tournament on for months longer) but I would hope at the very least it provides a more fair and competitive system that is still fun for the players involved. :smile:

If we are doing seeding based matchmaking instead of Random based matchmaking i feel like the people who would inevitably drop out early should be allowed at least a 1 round extension so they dont just have no chance. (Im not familiar with how they do it in the FGC community, i come from smogon where its always random based.)

Like lyleberr said after you get knocked out it becomes stale and people are less likely to follow. From my experience even if someone isnt playing in a round they are still invested which would lead to increased activity.

Sorry if im being annoying.

No worries! I’m glad someone is bringing up these concerns.

I do agree that interest in these tournaments tends to wane once players have been eliminated. A Swiss system would keep them engaged for longer, yes, but we’d still encounter a similar problem in the final bracket during the later stages. There’s also a logistical issue as matches often take 1-2 weeks to schedule and play out (people lead busy lives and this is a card collecting forum, not a competitive battling one), so Swiss would take the tournaments from 3-4 months to 6-7 easily. By that time people may be burned out from the format and ready to move on to the next generation.

But since these tournaments are community-focused, nothing is set in stone. I think if there’s enough support and reasoning for a different bracket format (Swiss > final bracket) or seeding practices then I’d be happy to adjust. I run these for the E4 community so I do want people to have fun while still having a fair and competitive environment for those who want to sweat.
