Good games, DDK! Very solid team design and you knew exactly what to do with it. Good luck to everyone in the rest of the tournament!

Dominating play, and highly difficult to stop once it gets going. Looking forward to the rest of VGC in the coming weeks.

Hoping we can wrap the VGC bracket up before I leave for Japan on Nov 19…otherwise grands may have to wait till Dec.

Singles probably won’t finish till then at the rate it’s going

Had a really fun set against @Tryson21 in Singles just now. This is the result of having a bracket match against your practice partner when you know each other’s habits lol. Ended up wining 2-0 but the second game was really close

The results are in, with a 2-0 result… Tryson’s team had a serious match up advantage over mine, but I just eeked out some good plays and switches for the win.

Probably my favorite set of games this tournament. We both played really well. Thanks again @Tryson21 for the games!

Lots of exciting sets lately. Time for a bracket update!

VGC 2009

We are in the home stretch and finally have our Top 4 competitors! It’s between @silversnorlax204 and @caughtatpoint to claim the final podium spot. It’s only a matter of time before a victor can be crowned as E4’s first VGC champion!

Gen 4 OU

Singles still has a way to go as we are seeing the AU timezone vs NA timezone matchup in real time! Regardless, there are a lot of seasoned competitors left in this bracket who are raring to challenge me for the Gen 4 crown!

@silversnorlax204 and I just played our vgc match. Very close games, probably some of the most fun I’ve had in a while.

Barely caught this live but glad I did. Games were as close as I expected and came down to some clever mind games.

Congrats on another podium finish @caughtatpoint. You’re facing @SeasidePokemon now. Winner then gets to fight me for a chance at the first E4 VGC crown!

Despite taking the L, and missing the podium I must say I’m quite happy with a top 4 finish! As I like to do, I’m going to post my team here and chat a bit about it and how it works. Enjoy!

Off Meta Pick (Electivire) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Motor Drive
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Atk / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature

  • Helping Hand
  • Follow Me
  • Ice Punch
  • Earthquake

The combination of follow me and motor drive results in a lot of deflection away from my partner pokemon that may not like to take electric moves. it also allows for discharge Zapdos to give me a speed boost. With just 36 speed EV’s and a +1 speed then I end up out running max speed base 110’s. Specifically I knew the lati twins as well as gengar were problematic for this team so the use of ice punch helped greatly to answer those threats.

KFC (Zapdos) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 8 HP / 16 Def / 232 SpA / 8 SpD / 244 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 30 HP / 2 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD

  • Discharge
  • Heat Wave
  • Hidden Power [Flying]
  • Thunderbolt

I ended up running HP flying over a coverage move like grass or ice as I was actually more concerned with dealing with ludicolo (who is pretty solid this gen). I also decided to play this zapdos a bit more risky and run specs for a little extra power which worked to my favor a number of times this tournament. Having the double threat of spread discharge or t bolt to unleash on people does play a bit of a mind game too. Lastly you’ll notice the EV’s on Zap are a bit odd, not max speed? That’s to out run opposing Zap and the few base 100’s in the tier while in trick room. I’m not much for speed ties so I would rather know when I’m going to win or lose them.

Dong (Bronzong) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Atk / 44 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe

  • Earthquake
  • Explosion
  • Hypnosis
  • Trick Room

Oddly, this guy ended up being the MVP of my team more frequently than not. Like most folks I was going to run Metagross but decided I actually wanted a way to hard check Metagross instead. Zong does this with a tremendous amount of success as it runs just enough bulk to out live gross. Hypnosis was also pretty clutch most games and the fantastic typing helped me to come in on dragon moves. Overall really great mon that I did not expect to get as much milage out of as I did, but hey, here we are.

Horns on Head (Gastrodon-East) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Storm Drain
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 212 HP / 52 Def / 108 SpA / 132 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe

  • Earth Power
  • Yawn
  • Protect
  • Icy Wind

My favorite little slug! I wanted something bulky that would do well on switches and provide immediate pressure in TR. In the event I was not running TR I wanted a form of speed control that was effective, so icy wind was my choice here. Ultimately during my tournament run I actually found earth power and yawn to be way better than icy wind, but it certainly still has it’s place. The EV spreads I calc’ed forever ago to survive certain things and I forget what those are now, but if you watched any of my matches you’ll know this little guy just survives so much stuff. Only thing I wish I was aware of this gen was that storm drain still takes damage from water moves. One of the ideas behind the slug was to help with water target moves as this team struggles against swift swim users. Looks like gen 5 is where this guy will really shine so we may see him on a team of mine again in the future.

Not Nerf’ed Yet (Cresselia) (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 196 Def / 60 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

  • Ice Beam
  • Trick Room
  • Psychic
  • Energy Ball

Cress is easily one of the best mons in the gen. It gets a nerf in later gens and for good reason. I found cress to be too good not to include on my team so I added her. In hindsight I don’t think she ran enough offensive EV’s to really threaten the way I would want her too. But she does a great job of surviving, setting up TR and threating with ice and grass coverage for very specific key threats that my team otherwise does not deal with. She has her place but would have liked to have gotten much more out of this slot.

Hot Foot (Arcanine) @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 188 HP / 252 SpA / 68 SpD
Modest Nature

  • Sunny Day
  • Overheat
  • Helping Hand
  • Protect

Poor puppy only took the field in games I lost :frowning: The idea here was that I could generate OHKO’s against metagross, set up sun against rain and then helping hand my way out of situations that lead to me needing more offense. Not a great slot pick but I did need something to help counter rain and physical offense and this did the trick the best with a speed tier I could live with. I may look at hitmontop instead in the future.

Overall, the team did pretty well. A lot of things I prepped to see I was surprised to see were not in tournament (lati twins, more zapdos, dusknoir and smergal). So i ended up having a team with very specific answers to threats that did not exist. That said, overall happy to have a top 4 finish and can’t wait to do it all over again for Gen 5!
