Great games! Reminder that swapping teams between games is not allowed. Only changing the lead Pokemon is (everything else from items, moves, Pokemon, EVs/IVs must remain the same).
Also @caughtatpoint, your opponent is @mrbubbles
Oww sorry! I truly was not aware. I must have overlooked the rules, so won’t do it in the next game.
Cheers!
No worries, mistakes happen! Good luck on your next match!
I also had no idea but great to know.
Is it to late to join?
The tournament is already underway so it’s too late.
Keep an eye out for the next thread when we move on to Generation 4! You’re welcome to join then.
Absolutely would love to. Count me in next tournament
@amcgl58 and myself have finished our games. 2-0 for @silversnorlax204. Thanks for the fun match up @amcgl58 !
Game 1: [Gen 3] OU: silversnorlax204 vs. amcgl58 - Replays - Pokémon Showdown!
Game 2: [Gen 3] OU: silversnorlax204 vs. amcgl58 - Replays - Pokémon Showdown!
Had a lot of fun trying out this VERY odd team and having it work. Took a lot of tinkering but I quite like it. Can’t wait to build a new one for my next opponent.
Nice games!
Will and i played. I won 2-1 in 3 very close matches.
Crazy that this is the first 2-1 of the tournament.
Congrats on qualifying for Top 8!
Just wanted to honor one of the greatest gaming moments in history.
Yep was also going to mention that! First time a series went to 3 games. Great games.
Unfortunately showdown was down yesterday during the scheduled game time between myself and @caughtatpoint . So we will get to it soonish!
Cheers!
Hey everyone!
I wanted to post a team report of my round one win. As I don’t plan on using the same team twice, I don’t see why not. I hope you all enjoy, and can learn the methods to my madness so you can crush me later in the tournament
For those of you confused by the nicknames, I took inspiration from one of the greatest competitive Super Smash Bros Melee moments in history. The wombo combo! Just an FYI the link is NSFW as there is a good bit of language. So hide your kids, hide your wife, they kicking everybody up in there.
I wanted to come out swinging in the first round so decided I would like to bring a combination of heavy hitters with just a bit of bulk. Overall the team for me is still a work in progress as it has a bad match up to pert, and can get walled out by some versions of blissey. Flygon and Mence are also both problems for the team depending on moveset so still more to do with this one. Additionally strong walls with roar/whirlwind really gave this team a hard time so TSS was for sure my enemy.
I give you team: WOMBO COMBO!
Uh-Oh (Breloom) @ Leftovers
Ability: Effect Spore
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Mach Punch
- Spore
In practice with this team the lead slot was the hardest thing for me to figure out. While I used another lead for a majority of my testing I decided last min come tournament time to switch up to a mon I really liked. Breloom! I tried playing with breloom quite a bit on ladder and just could not make it quite work for me, but I was always using it in a mid-late game position. The logic here in the lead slot is that it outruns or ties with most base 70’s. Mons that are faster than breloom (that I’m thinking I can survive) get the spore, giving me a lot of moment early game. If they switch to something else I get team information at a minimum. Sub to scout and the strongest focus punch in the game to really make my opponents say… uh oh.
Happy Feet (Raikou) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 32 HP / 92 Def / 168 SpA / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 SpA
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Grass]
Oddly enough I found Zapdos to be difficult for me to use when I tried it out but ultimately decided that Raikou had the right combination of moves, speed, and offensive firepower to punch through what I needed. Ev’s are there to help me switch in and deal with offensive pert EQ that otherwise has a great time against this team.
Raikou makes for a great mid to late game sweeper. With calm mind behind a substitute it cracks a lot of walls and checks including bliss without seismic toss. Skarm does not want to sit in front of it, and some ground types are uneasy to switch in as well. With the EV’s above I also have a 30% chance to OHKO standard Dugtrio when it attempts to trap. HP grass > Ice as it breaks through most versions of pert after a single CM boost, and Thunderbolt is a great 2HKO on mence without a boost (usually). With the great speed and ability to cover a good chunk of the meta, happy feet seemed to be the most appropriate nickname.
Wombo Combo (Tyranitar) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 108 HP / 136 Def / 16 SpA / 248 Spe
Lax Nature
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Rock Slide
- Dragon Dance
- Fire Blast
By far the most odd creation here. T-tar runs so many sets and it’s hard to decide what the “right” check is most of the time. I wanted to take full advantage of this and create what I would refer to as a good “chunker” that supports the rest of the team. Ev’s are there to help me survive against dugtrio and fire back with an HP grass to get damage. Fire blast helps stop steels in their tracks and has decent coverage against other mid ground plays. DD is there for two reasons: first, to give false information to my opponent, if I’m setting up I look like a physical threat. The common switch ins for that are typically skarm, pert, metagross, all of which have issues with my coverage moves. The second reason is that the speed boost from DD combined with the EV’s allow me to outrun adamant dug, and other base 115 with neutral speed natures such as starmie, who don’t like boosted rock slides. Even in a Bo3 format this thing causes a good bit of chip setting me up for the ultimate wombo combo late game!
That Ain’t Falco (Aerodactyl) @ Choice Band
Ability: Rock Head
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Double-Edge
- Hidden Power [Bug]
Classic CB Aero here. Nothing crazy fancy but did try several different moves until I found what I liked. HP bug was chosen over HP flying as bug just has better coverage against things I was having issues with. Rock slide and EQ are both obvious staples, but I found a lot of joy in using double edge as it actually provided a lot of great neutral coverage if I had to use it early game to hurry and eliminate a threat. It’s a good bird, but that ain’t falco.
Oh OH OHHHHHHHH (Dugtrio) @ Choice Band
Ability: Arena Trap
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Slide
- Double-Edge
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Bug]
Another standard mon here. Dug is really great at coming in after t-tar, aero or raikou have gone down to finish a threat that they have chunked. As this team does not use spikes, it’s important to utilize all the chip damage I can so the faster mons can come in and clean. I use an identical ev spread and moveset to Aero as they essentially fill the same role. I did debate running something like beat up to help with bliss but found I just preferred the EQ. If I were to change anything on this team it would be dug to something slightly more bulky to survive odd HP grass/Ice and bolt beam users. Since this mon is used to open holes it usually had me saying oh, OH OHHHH when I got it to work in ways that would open up the rest of the team.
Where you at? (Moltres) @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 SpA
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Will-O-Wisp
- Substitute
The sixth slot saw the most changes here. I was running Charizard for quite a while but found the lack of the “right” moveset to be problematic and usually the speed to be a bit higher than what it needed to check. So I changed to moltres hoping the speed tier would be acceptable enough to hit most things. The combination of fire and grass coverage give me great responses to skarm and pert, and WoW helps me to check things like t-tar and mence that come in against it. Sub is also really useful for scouting checks and still getting a bit of chip safely. While I think there may be a better answer to the sixth slot, I have to ask myself, if there is, where you at?
Thanks for sharing! Team looks like a good mix between standard mainstays and your own innovations. I was pretty surprised to see your Ttar outrun a Dugtrio after a DD in one of the replays, but can see why now.
@caughtatpoint beat me 2-0. Thanks for the games! Appreciate it.

Game 2: [Gen 3] OU: e4tourney2023 vs. Mist3rBubbles - Replays - Pokémon Showdown!
And to add, thanks a lot for organizing the event @ddk . As you can see by the replays, these are my absolute first games in any kind of competitive Pokemon matches. I was a bit all over the place but I find the games fun. I was trying out different teams and went on a 9 match losing streak in random battles before I decided the team and the way I play was not working, but I enjoyed the process very much.
Looking forward to being a bit more competitive in the future tournaments,
Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed the tournament, was really nice to have you! Considering this was your first time playing competitive Pokemon, you did quite well and kept things competitive.
While there’s a wide variety of different skill levels in these events, part of the fun comes from learning about old formats and experimenting.
Hope to see you again in Generation 4!
You played very well Mr. Bubbles! You got matched up against a couple people who have played on Showdown before between @caughtatpoint and myself. And generally speaking, we’re pretty good! I’m actually quite outstanding. Also handsome. And modest.
