Dyl's PSA Return (10/22): CGC Cross & Shocking PSA Resubmission

To be honest, I’ve only ever had two instances where I strongly disagreed with the grade that PSA provided.

1. A PSA 9 Karen’s Umbreon that was later downgraded to a PSA 7. (read more below)

Hi All,

I bought this PSA 9 a few months ago, knowing that it wasn’t mint quality. In my opinion, it would qualify for a PSA 6 or 7 considering the corner crease and edge wear. I sent it off to PSA under their Grade Guarantee policy free of charge. How is your experience with PSA owning up to their mistakes? Looking forward to your thoughts. I will update the thread when the slab comes back from PSA.

Q: Do you guarantee the grades for my cards?
A: PSA guarantees that all cards submitted to it shall be graded in accordance with PSA grading standards and under the procedures of PSA. If PSA, in fact, concludes that the card in question no longer merits the PSA grade assigned or fails PSA’s authenticity standards, PSA will either: 1) Buy the card from the submitter at the current market value if the card can no longer receive a numerical grade under PSA’s standards, or 2) Refund the difference in value between the original PSA grade and the current PSA grade if the grade is lowered. In this case, the card will also be returned to the customer along with the refund for the difference in value.

Long awaited update on this Karen’s Umbreon. After 10 weeks in CRC, PSA finally made a decision. They took ownership of their mistake and have regraded the card to a NM 7. In addition to sending me the PSA 7 in its new case, they will be cutting a check for $400. Overall, I think this is a reasonable conclusion and I was pleased with their CRC support. 10/10 would submit a PSA Grade Guarantee again.

2. The PSA 7 Vaporeon above.

That said, there have been many cards on eBay, PWCC, etc. that I chose not to buy because I thought that they were graded too leniently.

So is it a gamble? Maybe. But I think PSA is more often on-target than off.
