I was immediately interested in the card and decided to message the seller about the signatures origin and if he had any pictures of the moment or anything. He claimed it was signed this January in Dallas however Fukuda only did personalized signatures at the event and this one isn’t personalized.
If you take a look at Rayquazas top left corner on the sketch, closer look imgur.com/a/ZmpCUrj.png , it looks a bit smudged and a straight line wouldnt be that. Do you think the personalization has been removed closely after it being signed or is this a genuine signature without a personalization?
Having attended this event and had multiple cards signed I know for a fact he only did personalized ones. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone removed the personalization afterwords as the greed never stops for someone.
Here are two signatures I had done which match the one in question
He stopped signing his English name along the bottom part way through day one so the signature missing that is fine. I also know psa has been a real stickler with authenticating atleast Fukuda signatures. Swolepoke signatures which I legit watched get signed were deemed with questionable authenticity. Psa however has authenticated a bunch of fake Sugimoris as well so it’s really just a wash to value the psa label at this point. Comparing to my two I would say it’s a legit card but it really boils down to whether you want that large smudge knowing very well it could of been rubbed off.
Edit: pulled mine up side by side with the one in question and there is some odd differences. I personally would stay away from it. Comparing all the signatures I have from Fukuda he has a fair bit of variation which could fit to include this one as legit too but it’s really on the edge and if a seller is willing to get rid of a personalization I wouldn’t doubt that they would do to forge signatures too.
Yes I am staying away from this one, thanks for the information! I share the same view as you. The seller claims that he had a “plug” that got it signed for him without a personalization for 500$, I have a hard time seeing Fukuda going away from his contract for 500$.
If the seller can’t provide a picture of the signing or some other form of provenance, I would feel really weird about buying it. While I think PSA’s endorsement of a signature generally helps more than it hurts, nothing beats a photo/video that captures the moment. The smudge and the fact that Fukuda personalized all his signatures make this item fishy at best.
I’ve never seen someone remove it from a Pokemon card but personalized autographs being removed is very common with autographs. I think in general it should be disclosed when it is done and does appear it was removed from this card.
I’ve seen this card a few times - once before it was graded right after the Dallas event and it’s popped up for sale a couple times now. It absolutely looks like an authentic autograph that’s had the personalization wiped.
Here’s my perspective - TPC asked for Mr. Fukuda to personalize every autograph. The greatest speculative reason for that is to deter resellers. What this listing potentially does is show TPC that Mr. Fukuda may not have followed through and could call his integrity into question, and by extension maybe the integrity of the artist event as well. With that said, everyone’s cards belong to them and they have the right to do whatever they want with them, but it’s an unfortunate situation.
What are the cert numbers?
Also… Will ‘fans’ removing personalizations from signed cards make artists withdraw from signing events?
They sign with personalization for various reasons, the main reason is to not get tons of flippers lined up to cash in on their signature. Flippers using chemicals to remove the ink damages the card and damages the provenance. PSA not spotting does doesn’t help either… the autograph might be authentic, but it’s (partially) altered.
Another seller with a bunch of cards signed all at Dallas 2020. I really think it is horrible to see people trying to sell these cards as “Not personalized as most other cards” and claiming in pm that they were signed at the “VIP signing session after hours” without personalization. This is straight up a fraud if you try to sell people an altered product and claiming it is authentic.
Let me know if you think Im right or wrong here, not looking for a witchhunt or anything like it, just for the best of this hobby!
