Discussion about hiding the cert number on graded cards

The other thing I find strange is the numbers are covered but they dont cover the bar code. You can still scan the code off the screen

excellent summary, not much more to discuss

I get why you would hide the cert in pictures you just post on social media. But I can’t think of much I care about less than hiding a cert for a card I’m actively trying to get rid of lol

Great point. There is no reason to “protect” the next owner of the card from the cert getting deactivated.

Ultimately, the buyer should expect to have access to this information before purchasing, unless it’s a stock image. But slabs worth faking are not going to have stock images. Perhaps it’s better to state if it’s stock, block out the number before hand, and require the buyer to ask for the cert number? But…

  • Scammers can still ask you for the cert
  • Extra hassle
  • Scammers could also do this and provide a legitimate cert.
  • Hurts your cred as a seller

Would you buy a car without the vin? No WAY!
Perhaps PSA needs to start registering certs, but then you’d have to inform them of every sale…

In security, hiding info falls under security through obscurity, which is a false sense of security. Really, if PSA is going to potentially deprecate a cert no., then they need to track that number’s owner, or provide free re-labelling.

OR maybe the solution is to provide the cert only after payment is received, and then they can verify with the PSA images that that card is the one that cert belongs to. I think this is actually the only way to do it, and keep the cert secret, unless PSA actively tracks the owners.

Found it having more pros than cons and some of the points raised I have found to be irrelevant. So am going to keep this practice as the Japanese have been practicing.

Yup right, nothing to discuss further, other than to answer someone’s query why such practice is done by so many people. Not asking for affirmations or agreements too.

So you don’t care about your buyer if he/she bought it and its serial number becomes deactivated due to being part of a fraud case?

Not selling on ebay, used to more than 15 years ago. Left because too many ebay’s rules and crap on seller. Frauds and non-paying buyers were also another heartache on ebay.

From me showing it in the sales listing that was used for them to be able to buy it? No lol.

They can either not buy it or just contact PSA to get it taken care of. Literally never heard of a buyer being concerned about a seller showing a cert number for a card they want to buy.
