Diamond and Pearl Era - Is it an investment?

Hell yeah bro its a part of Poke history just like anything else.

Wait for a Diamond and Pearl remaster. That will be the jolt it needs. Otherwise probs another 5 years.

Stormfront, Supreme Victors, Majestic Dawn are probably what you’d wanna start with. Gonna be honest, I’ve been buying a ton of lv. X’s and primes because they’re what I grew up with and liked the most as a kid, but when I buy those I don’t expect them to go up in value. I think most people think lv.X’s and primes are boring/garbage.

I enjoy collecting the Lv. X cards but am not going to spend 4 figures on a booster box. The chase cards are affordable and have a stronger future then sealed product imo.

You ARE in the right place. However, nobody knows the future. Buy some out of print product and sit on it, you’ll likely have some luck there. If people could predict what sets were going to be a good investment there would be some really rich people. You can have an idea, but nothing is certain. Then again, from what I see people really like cards sets that have the first edition stamp. I currently am collecting those.

Brilliant investment, I´d buy 17x Great Encounters and 5x Legends Awakened right now, those are by far the sets with the highest expected ROI.

I can agree with this. The relative cheapness of the better pulls compared to sealed product would lead me to believe card singles would see a better percentage growth. But I would be very picky what cards I buy from this era since I think overall there are much better “investments” out there.

Yes, bid up my legends awakened booster box on ebay to $3000. Much appreciated!

Also something worth noting – many boxes are well above expected pull value because besides the gamble & scarcity, there are people who simply enjoy collecting sealed boxes to display / showcase. Up until Diamond & Pearl sealed boxes were… Sealed boxes. Then they became this weird half transparent display visible packs easily crushed product. Doesn’t really matter if you’re opening the packs but there’s much less visual appeal than earlier boxes.

They’re neither really rare nor really old, not even very popular.
Buy them if you enjoy them, don’t expect huge gains.
If you like to gamble, more power to you.

But there are certainly other opportunities in Pokemon that are older, rarer and more popular than sealed DP era stuff.

For “investing” in pokemon, I would try to go even older. “Oldest” is usually best when it comes to holding value. The pop reports should not be used as a guide for these cards as I would imagine there is tons of gradeable supply both sealed and in collections. That will ultimately put a cap on large increases in value. But collect what you love. If you love these cards and want to preserve value or make money I would be careful to buy them cheaply

History has shown that you could have blindly bought anything pre-DP and you’d be ahead today

Outside of the most recent product (which you can of course still make money from if you know what you’re doing) you can probably blindly buy anything and still be ahead in 5 years.

That said, some choices are far better than others. The difference in opportunity is something that you can never know until after the fact. With more experience and exposure to the hobby you can start to develop a better intuition. Even then, often it’s just a blind guess.

Back to the main question. Are DP sets good investment opportunities? You will probably make money if you hold it. How much? No one can tell you. Are there better choices if we are only considering money? Almost certainly. Investing does not exist without risk, and often the larger the risk the better the payoff (or larger the loss). You can’t subtract the risk, no one can honestly validate your choice here beyond speculation

if the booster boxes start hitting 4-5k and your pops don’t move much, i think those are indicators to hop onto the investment train. it’s like the ex boxes. i think clearly there is not much product, and the pops are so low that the demand for cards has driven up the prices a lot recently.

I have a PSA 10 set of these supreme victor birds

The zapdos is pop 21 and has around an 11% PSA 10 rate. Honestly I just bought them for cheap awhile back because I love that they’re holo reprints of the ANA promos. There’s a few cool cards here and there from the DP era(pikachu holo reprints, hitmonchan reprint, charizard reprint, some cool lv x cards) that I think will definitely do well long term, but honestly if your main intention is investment returns then I’d just stick with WOTC

One thing of note for these cards that I’ve seen growing in popularity is doing cubes, I believe that’s the name at least. If the name is incorrect, feel free to correct me. But basically, what I’m thinking of is where someone makes a crap ton of decks from a many different long gone eras and hosts there own mini tournament. For example, only 2006 era worlds decks, or something like that.

One of my friends is quite heavily into this stuff, he’s got literally dozens of the top decks, even the one’s that utilize gold stars. I can imagine this is also a thing with really old school decks like haymaker and whatnot, but there’s a little more variation in the slightly newer stuff. I feel this is kind of what is keeping the Lv. X market alive.

That being said, in my opinion, the cards that will go up are likely to be the ones that topped during their respective time frame. However, I can’t speak for graded versions of the cards. Naturally some people might gravitate to something lesser used due to liking that Pokemon or something, but that won’t necessarily lead to a ridiculous price spike.

Personally, I don’t like the cards because I feel the art was lackluster throughout. Scrolling through an album of photos just now I didn’t see any that screamed “I need to own this card, it’s so beautiful!” Only time will tell, but it’s also not like they are printing these anymore.

Everything I just said might be nostalgia glasses though, so take everything with a grain of salt, eh :stuck_out_tongue:
