Cosmic Eclipse vs. Roaring Skies

Hello,

I’m looking to move back in time for my next booster box. I currently have mostly SWSH booster boxes.

Right now, Cosmic and Roaring both sell for roughly $4,000.

Am I mistaken that Cosmic is the set that had more demand?

Regarding scarcity, I read that RS was printed quite a lot, but I look up pop reports, and cosmic has total graded pop of 155,000 while RS has only 25,000 graded pop.

Is it accurate to assume that RS was printed to 1:6 ratio to Cosmic?

If you had to pick one to put your money into, which would it be?

Cosmic Eclipse has a way better set list than roaring skies.

If you opened every card in roaring skies, which cards would you grade? Probably only M/rayquaza and M/latios.

The only reason Roaring skies was ever discussed and worth money was because of the Shaymin EX for playability. Once it rotated out, the set was worthless until rayquaza started gaining popularity and value (in the last year or so).

Thank you for the input. I read about that Shaymin pull. My thinking was that because Roaring Skies supposedly had a smaller print run, it would compensate in rarity where it lacks in set value. Maybe I am looking at it the wrong way and should simply focus on the sets with the highest set value demand.

Considering Cosmic Eclipse was released in 2019 and Roaring Skies in 2015, the fact that both booster boxes are the same price rn now should already be indication enough that Cosmic Eclipse is more popular and in demand than Roaring Skies. :wink:

But which way you want to buy for your own collection or investment purposes, is completely up to you. :person_shrugging:

No. We have no idea of how much either was printed. Cosmic is a much better set though and thats what matters most at the end of the day.

I’m not sure how much you can attribute the difference in the amount graded to the print run. Cosmic Eclipse has a lot more of the sort of cards people tend to grade like the trainer gallery, rainbows and alt arts. The Piplup itself has just under 5k graded with PSA. I believe a lot more people were actively grading cards by the time Cosmic Eclipse released than when Roaring Skies released as well, so that will also bias the numbers.

They definitely were, but 155k to 25k is significantly different. Lots of people were grading in the XY era as well

Thanks, I was thinking about this also. It makes sense. I wonder how much this skews the ratio, though. I still think RS was printed significantly less, though.

I would say Cosmic Eclipse is the better set/box as it has a ton of nice art throughout with all of the Trainers, GX cards, etc from the S&M era and they all are still highly in demand overall. Pop reports on grading only tell you so much and a high pop doesn’t necessarily dictate anything other than people have graded a lot because of potential premium involved and the higher overall demand. In reality, there could be just as much if not more available cards from Roaring Skies that just haven’t been graded due to less demand or incentive to grade them, therefore the pop is much lower.

In other words, low pop does not necessarily equate to low print run, etc as with most sets the print runs are mostly speculation at best.

In my personal view, anything prior to 2020 was likely printed less on average as it was before the Covid/SWSH era which saw new & unprecedented demand for both slabs and new booster boxes.

I have no insight or ideas about the print metrics. Going strictly off vibes, cosmic eclipse is a significantly better set. One of the most fun sets to open in recent memory.
