I personally haven’t really regretted anything with my Pokémon TCG collection to be honest. Sure there are some things I should have done differently, but when I was young I had other interests, and for more recent things: thinking back I would probably do the same now.
Some examples: trading my first packs Base holo Chansey for a common Vulpix, Pidgey and Pidgeotto. As a kid I preferred more cards over holos anyway.
Trading my gemmint pulled LC Reverse Foil Moltres for an Ancient Mew card (currently have an LC Reverse Foil Moltres incoming for nostalgic sake).
And spending 900 USD on a card that was worth 250 USD a couple of months later. (YOU Wagon Pikachu). But like I said, I’d probably do the same now. What if there weren’t a lot more for sale and I’d have missed my chance. What would the price be if people like me didn’t buy or bid on those first few copies. Would others have emerged if that first copy ended low?
So yeah, I can call some mistakes and slight regrets, but no real “Ah damn!!” moments.
Except the obvious of course: not buying a couple of boxes, 1st edition Charizards, and using sleeves when I started collecting at the age of 7.
Man this thread is depressing, what a way to start the day.
Overall my biggest regret is the common case of periodic loss of engagement. I wish that I was driven to collect more than I did during the ex era in particular. But looking back I can’t really dwell on it because even if I did have that drive, it simply was not the time or place for me to do so. I didn’t have the time or capital, nor the knowledge or resources needed to collect efficiently. In most cases I’d say my missed opportunities were in my best interest to focus on more important things in my life.
jk I’d give up my high school girlfriend any day of the week for a gem mint gold star.
I only collected in Year 6, 7 and 8 then pokemon died out in my school as the fad was over.
Ive still got all my childhood cards, they arent in the best of condition ha! I also regret losing my charizard holo…I say lost…Pretty sure it was half inched! I do have a japanese Neo Umbreon…which is awesomeeee and a bunch of other cool cards Brought back memories when I got them out.I also have a bunch of magic cards from 2000-2003 aswell
I opened one 7 years ago, for $180. No regrets, as packs were made to be opened. And the holos and crystals I pulled that I still have are worth more now together than what I paid for the whole box.
As for my regrets, there aren’t really too many I can think of. I opened a lot of boxes in the past that are worth a good bit now, but it has never been a money making game for me. I bought them with the intention of opening them, and filling the holes in my complete sets. And because I did, my sets are good condition overall, and I rarely had to resort to buying from ebay and troll and toad risking obtaining non near mint singles.
Any regret I have is a miscut that I wanted that I did not pull the trigger on or that slipped through my fingers. There are few though, since I know if I don’t buy it, I’ll regret it by the next week anyways lol. Of course a lot of people are going to say “Oh I wish I bought more of these back when they aren’t as expensive” but I think everyone wishes that. If you don’t buy something now, then you’ll be thinking the same thing 5 years from now about today’s cards.
I’m happy to see that a lot of this thread isn’t about that though.
Damn, that is rough. I pulled crystal charizard from my box as well. Never imagined that it would be as much as it is today.
I never went through that phase. I’ve been hooked since '08. You can always get them all back at least, just will cost a bit more unfortunately. Definitely a regret.
Yep i’ve started collecting again, fresh. Just doing base set 1st ed with a few side cards that i pick up on the way maybe one day i’ll be in possession of a crystal zard again.
Starting to collect German cards when I came back to the hobby in 2015. Colltected German cards for about half a year before I switched to Japanese. So much money lost…
Reviving a thought to be dead thread because oh do I have a regret:
I did not buy another Mario Pikachu box. I got one for my girlfriend back when it first came out and had her open it thinking I could get it later for a similar price. HA. Lesson: Is it exclusive? Buy two or keep it sealed.
Currently the cheapest Mario Version sealed I found was for $200 on Ebay. Luigi is not as expensive, but together I have seen them for over $300. At its lowest, I saw a Luigi Box sealed for about $86.
