Collecting WotC Black Star Promos?

Hi, there. New to the forum. I’ve recently started collecting WotC era Pokemon cards, the cards from my childhood are long gone but as a die hard fan of the series even today I’ve been wanting to start a serious collection.

To start my collection I am going for the complete 53 card set of Black Star promos that were released in the WotC era. I’m not looking for PSA grade or anything, just something to look at in a binder that will eventually be full of epic complete sets (one day).

I’m not sure how much a lot of these cards go for, though. I’ve noticed some certainly go for more than others but does anyone know the actual value of an Excellent/Near Mint set of these cards? Which ones to look out for? Any information on this set would be amazing, thanks!

I’d post what I have so far but I think that would belong in another subforum, I have about 20 of them so far, though.

Hey buddy, welcome to the forum! WotC Black Star Promos are a good way to start since there are only 53 cards. I know over the past year or two numbers 40 and 41 have gotten a bit pricey in comparison to the other ones. I know 40 and 41 have ranged between $40-100. Especially number 41 which has the Charizard and Pikachu. A lot of them get sold either rated or sealed in their original plastic wrap. The rest should be easy depending on your budget. I know of certain errors with the WB kids movie ones where I think their stamps are misplaced, backwards or something like that. Good luck  Let us know when you complete it!

Thanks for the quick reply! I am also having a hard time finding #53 Suicune, which annoys me so much to think I used to own it as a kid with the DVD release of 4ever!

Is there a reason why it has a decent value? Being the last WotC era promo I can see it, but same could be said for #1 Pikachu which isn’t worth a lot at all.

EDIT: After a bit of searching I found a single one on Amazon for $4. I really wonder why this card goes for $25+ on Ebay?

Noting anything else I saw Venusaur was expensive too but I snagged a Played condition one for under $10 which I am very pleased about.

Remember that the condition is very important and because these are older cards that were owned by people like us when they were kids, the odds of finding them in better conditions is more difficult. Also remember that not all cards are printed or received the same way. I know that Venusaur came in like a magazine/ player guide if my memory doesn’t fail me. The 40 or 41 I think I’m not fully sure if they were Pokemon Center NY exclusives, that was back when the Nintendo store was a full Pokemon store by 30 Rock NY.
