Collecting Outside of Pokemon

Holy mother ********** this is beautiful…..

No matter how well I try to remember I can’t think doing of any other collectibles than Pokemon in past. Some of my family/friends like to collect Moomin mugs, that may have been even a logical step for me considering how much I used to watch those cartoons.

Besides Pokemon is already big enough playground where you can always learn new things and make it as cheap/expensive you want, collecting half a dozen other tcg things doesn’t make any sense.

I think this is a great way to present some other collectible hobbies on this forum!

As for me, I have, for a long time, collected the below (after also, of course, collecting stones and random gems and pebbles first).

  1. Original video game and different media (e.g. VHS covers, book illustrations, board game art) collection.
  • I have about 10 pieces in total, but I think with the nature of the artworks (everything being 1:1) and the prices, this is still quite a lot for me (although as we know, there are always collectors with hundreds of pieces, regardless of the hobby).

  • Here is my personal grail, that I believe I will never get myself to sell. This is the original artwork for the box art of a Tom & Jerry GBC game. This is a fairly random game but it was the first ever game I played and myself owned. It was a gift from my parents and I used to play this for years, never beating it, when I There will never be anything more nostalgic to me than the soundtrack in this game.

  • Here is also an original tile illustration from my favourite boardgame Tigris & Euphrates.

  • Spawn: Armaggedon Story board artwork:

  1. Video Games - I have one graded copy for memory and then many CIB ones. I love Gameboy, Gamecube, and N64 mainly.

  2. Paper notes - inherited from my grandpa, who inherited it from his dad who worked in a bank, and was able to obtain some great-condition notes from as much as 100 years ago. Here is one in a great condition:

  1. BOOKS
  • I do not buy them for collectible purposes but if possible, I like to buy a physical copy even if the book is rather old (the same goes for some academia books, old manuals and so on). I think this is a very common collection people have without realising it, as books also hold some good value (although I do appreciate that collecting isn’t inherently connected to monetary value of things!).
  1. MTG - I love Arabian Nights, the best TCG set ever!!! (totally unbiased).

Why?

I enjoy the idea of preserving things, as well as appreciating that things can carry a sentimental value. In this regard, I am as opposite of a minimalist in this regard as much as can be. Is this called hedonism? Luckily, I am not yet in the ‘hoarder’ territory.

I also really enjoy the parallels and differences between hobbies, seeing how the markets move, how discourses shift, how people enter and leave the hobby and so on.

Nonetheless, I also hold the (maybe controversial) opinion that caring about value of items, is a big part of collecting, at least for me, and I do not think it is bad.

A lot of the stuff I purchase I would not have bought if I believed its value would drop. I would not buy a card worth hundreds (let alone thousands) knowing that I am essentially throwing my money away without means of regaining it (or part of it) again (by selling). Maybe this is because the money I put into it is often still of significant value to me. But regardless, there are also pieces I would never sell even if their value increased 10 fold from where it is now.

I’m really into classic Japanese cars. I have an AE86 coupe and a DC2 Integra Type R.

Pokemon has always been my main stay hobby however, throughout the years I have accumulated a decent watch collection.

I don’t really consider myself a watch collector though because I tend to buy watches to wear rather than because I have studied their history. For me watches serve more of a practical purpose but I buy cards purely for passion and nostalgia.

I do appreciate and care for my watches the way a collector would so in some sense you could label me a watch collector but it just feels different in my head.

We need to see at least one piece!! Are you more into vintage, or modern watches?

Like many others I have collected things since an early age. As a child living in the coast I would collect shells and stones worn by the sea. I still find myself constantly collecting these things . Here is one way I display my collection of stones.

I have been collecting Pokemon from the beginning and even when not actively collecting I had my binders and would look through them. Similar to @Will collecting gives me order and often a distraction from other stresses. It’s calming for me. I don’t think I start a new collections. My collection itch is satisfied with Pokemon, stones and work.

I’m a field biologist by trade. My job is all about collecting and ordering things😀! I guess it’s just part of my nature.

I’ve been avidly collecting retro video games and manga/comics for as long as I’ve been doing the same for Pokemon cards!

Since many people commented regarding books I included these I purchased many from this guy in one of the few meetups on FB marketplace. He had no idea what he had so it worked out both ways was only a 2 hour drive for me.

Its hard to say whether these are still heavily undervalued or simply not known enough about still but Chuang Yi’s : English mangas are some of the best Pokemon mangas ever made.I helped him price them out as well at what I paid or just over market. Because eBay charges such high fees on books 15.3% on sale. This guy sells Legos primarily so he didn’t know much about the Lot that he bought and ya he scored probably a once in a lifetime buy honestly.

Some of these are missing dust covers and are in slightly dirty condition but still a very solid buy considering they are all complete minus a few missing dust covers.

Here is the debateable Pippi Series which he sold to another buyer for anyone interested: I personally believe the PM base set pictured above and Ruby n Sapphire set which are both connected by the stories are just as good as the Pippi set. Also, that being said anything beyond number #4 in Pippi set Magical Journey are very hard to find as well as numbers 9-12 being the hardest. This information is from a guy who was the biggest Pokemon manga seller and lives in Singapore. So he is a reputable source and knows alot 9-12 were printed right before Chuang Yi went out of business and didnt publish until many years later idk exactly when each one was published I could check possibly on my books.

I think my best way of buying would be private purchases thats how I have been able to get so many but I have also used proxy websites quite alot as well which charge fees and shipping. These are within the realm of Pokemon but still ya… niche I put them currently below sealed videogames which do have a pretty good demand. Not as big of a demand for the rarer books.

I moved around a lot as a kid and lost almost all my collections (Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, manga, figurines). By the time I finally settled down, I mostly just collected books.

I have some obscure ones, like a limited serialized-number book from a famous author who later in life developed some very problematic opinions, so that book is still stored somewhere at my family’s home.

I also tried collecting stamps for a while, but eventually stopped. And once I became an adult, I kept moving around for studies and work, so I never really had the chance to collect anything consistently.

I started collecting Pokémon cards this year (…during the Pokémon boom), since I finally settled in one city again. I’ll probably keep collecting books and Pokémon cards for an undefined amount of time.

Cheers,
Adhi

Me, currently playing Neopets in the year 2025 :eyes:

To answer the question though, I’ve also always collected things, from cards to rocks to figures, trinkets, manga, art supplies, and in-game objects. My sibling and I have what we call “corvid brain”- we love anything shiny (where that “shiny” can mean anything mildly interesting really).

My current collection fixation (aside from Piplups, of course), is actually avatars over on Neopets. If anyone isn’t familiar, they’re the site’s version of achievement hunting. I’ve been avatar collecting there on and off since I was a kid, and I mostly just have difficult ones left, but it’s been a lot of fun with my group of friends all helping each other out.

Used to collect Legos but it takes insane amounts of space, I used to collect YuGiOh until I had enough of Konami doing reprints of every single card, main reason that I moved into pokemon was for the promo cards

Several of you are aware that I am also a modest plastic crack (gunpla) consumer.

I’ve basically hopped around different media franchise collections over the years. Legos from childhood, gundams, whatever I could put my hands on and build

Yeah books can be really good much harder to sell and even collecting can be hard because some are hard to find there’s still growing in popularity. I think they’re undervalued both from a financial standpoint but also from a collector perspective. I speculated on the project well see how it turns out it took me three years to get what I have now. I’m selling like less than 5% currently.

I’ve always liked collecting things. I do it for fun and it satisfies my hunter/gather instincts. But I have since downsized many collections due to a lack of space and changing interests. I’ve also steered clear of anything marketed solely as ‘collectable’, to save money.

Aside from Pokemon cards, my other main collection is Sanrio stationery from Japan, which I’ve been collecting since the early 2000’s and is far better quality than the ‘Hello Kitty and Friends’ line that gets sold around here.

What can I say, I like paper.

I’ve always liked collecting. I remember collecting these before Pokemon. They were Tazos free inside packs of Walkers crisps. I completed the Star Wars but never managed to complete the Looney Tunes until I bought it complete as an adult.

questions with answers people aren’t ready for

For me, I collected pennies I found on the ground as a little kid. Ended up making hundreds of dollars worth. I sorted them for any wheat pennies, and even found a 1943 penny made of I think its a zinc/nickel combo.

I also liked collecting rocks/gems/fossils. Mostly found some neat stuff in a river I used to go to. Gems I’d get as presents. Don’t have much but I enjoyed it.

I used to collect videogames because I wanted to play some hidden gems for the DS. I was actively buying the coolest 3ds games and in the first couple years of the switch’s life before lots of shovelware and mobile game ports were getting physical releases I was up to date on every niche physical release. Notably I accidently bought two of the Japan exclusive double pack of bayonetta 1 and 2, which was the only way to get a physical copy of bayonetta 2. Not sure if that ever changed, but at the time it was quite the flex.

Besides that, I picked up reading manga, but I don’t consider that collecting. I just want to read stuff. I’m not hunting down super rare out of print stuff or whatever for any sort of collectors value. I just pray they reprint mushishi because I’m not paying collector prices. I need a bookshelf at this point, so its technically a collection, just not for the sake of collecting itself. I read what I buy and I buy what I think might be worth a read. I am open to recommendations.
