CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

I’m kind of at a loss at these changes. The slab and label looks worse now. Idk what to do with my current CGC slabs

Yeah sort of upping the 9.5 so you can call them a 10 and then adding 2 extra levels of 10’s.
Worse than how initially interpreted it.

As someone whose entire collection is CGC with subgrades all I can say is that this is depressing news. It’s quite literally impossible to complete my goals now… This just sucks :sob:

I also thought they were removing all .5 grades. Weird. I’m suprised as these are probably the biggest gripe most people had with the grading system

I’m a designer and initially I was not a fan (emphasis on not) of any grading companies labels, but it’s funny how overall perceptions of a brand shifts the way you think about a piece of design. On day one of my collecting journey I would have been a fan of this new label, but now it feels tacky and out of place to me.

I want the card to be the beautiful thing.

its gotta just be their way of stating grading will now not be super strict. I think itll be the same as it currently is (which tbh i think is fair) but a lot of people still think CGC is uber hard mode since they never officially stated their first change about a year ago

CGC has had its Blue Period

You pretty much nailed it. Color has a signature effect like few other visual indicators. In sports, we differentiate the teams by the color of their uniforms, for good reason. It’s the easiest thing to identify in a design.

I know that many people were complaining about the blue labels, but I don’t think that the color was the problem. It was just too much in your face. A more subtle design that still keeps the blue would have been much better imo. It’s that much more regrettable because CGC had the monopoly on the color blue in the grading company space.

Crystal clear grading scale

Current CGC 9.5’s will be bumped to 10’s!

But new cards can be sent to become CGC 9.5’s and stay 9.5’s!

Imo they just turned the new pristine grade into the new cgc perfect. Their version of the black label. Even though its the same color as bgs 10.

For all your questions.

I wonder how the no sub grades will play out over time. Cgc took some of mtg who is primarily bgs because of sub grades.

It’s time for CGC to buy Beckett and monopolize Magic lol

If cgc new mint 9 is equal to psa 9 and cgc new mint 9.5 is superior to psa 9 condition wise and their new gem mint 10 is equal to psa 10 and their new pristine 10 is superior to a psa 10 that has effectively double trumped the two main grades that people collect 9s and 10s that’s ingenious imo obviously it needs to be confirmed first.

So now one wonders: Are cards graded under the previous standard worth more or less money?
