CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

Even bigger question is will the cgc 9.5 mint + make the psa 9 redundant? All evidence is pointing to that.

They have lots of private equity money. You should try it! Lol

I don’t think that’s much of a question. A different grading company inventing a new grade is not gonna suddenly make people stop collecting PSA 9s.

I feel like some people want to argue that CGC grades way more modern, or that people choose to submit their better quality cards to PSA, which makes their Gem Mint grades stronger or whatever. Not sure how one would prove that. I will say that all of my CGC 9.5s feel PSA 10 worthy. I can’t say the same about all my PSA 10s, but that’s just a small sample size.

I do think PSA 10s will always command a higher premium than CGC 10s. I just don’t think PSA 10s are necessarily better quality.

Those wanting better condition collections but are priced out of 10s will find these very attractive.

You could easily compare the pop reports for modern between the two grading companies to get that first answer, but as far as determining if people submit their stronger cards to PSA, good luck. You would have to compare scans of cards across thousands of cards and across different time periods to try to get an overall feel for it. A nightmare that leads everyone to just prefer speculation instead

Why people still grade with cgc is beyond me. Those with really expensive cards like Charizard 1st Ed and Pikachu Illus why would you grade and lose $100000 instead of using psa it’s utter madness. Who are these peeps?

What is good about the PSA label is how consistent it is. It isn’t trying to be flashy, it’s just trying to convey information. It might not always get that right, but from a “design” perspective, the objective of the PSA label isn’t to be aesthetically pleasing. The fact the same layout is still in use and still works is a testament to the good “design” (information architecture).

In terms of the new CGC label, if they have actually tried to look good, they have failed. Having different font sizes alone is enough for me to never want to own a card in that slab. From a visual design standpoint, different font sizes for the same set of information is the biggest nope there is.

Psa don’t need to change anything. Everything they do screams high end quality. 5 stars. Diff size font screams cowboys they give me the ick.

bout time to lock it down?

Always makes me laugh when someone mentions this and then not much later it is. Maybe I should go on a thread locking session on things others like.

Or a very well written post on the multiverse that works great too. I actually really enjoyed that post back then and was upset I couldn’t respond. It’s the only time I’ve sent a dm about really enjoying a post.

Umm, excuse me math d00d, but you have an EVEN number of ODDish in your profile

But if you add the 6 numbers you get 21 (odd) which breaks down to 3 (2+1)
Or count the main pic and there’s 7.
Nice spot though I’m only toying.

This is probably not worth arguing about, because it’s totally subjective. Personally, I like the new CGC label a lot. But as I pointed out earlier in the thread, the difference in font sizes between sets is something they should absolutely fix. So I agree on that point.

Regardless, I think calling the PSA label a “good design” is a humungous stretch – both in terms of the aesthetics and the way it conveys information. The aesthetic portion isn’t worth discussing because of how subjective it is, but I genuinely don’t see how the new CGC label conveys the information any less effectively than the PSA label (IMO, the reverse is true). It feels very much like a glass house situation when people defend the PSA label while trashing the CGC label as “cheap” or “ugly.”

If PSA had an entirely different label and CGC came out with a label identical to the current PSA label, do you honestly think people would be defending it as a “good design?” People would be trashing it relentlessly.

I was looking at those illustrators close up and they pinged away lol.

I prefer CGC for MTG. In my experience, they are more strict with grading MTG cards than both PSA and BGS.

I am disappointed that they took away subgrades, as it may dissuade some of the larger MTG stores from submitting to CGC. There is too much obsession with subgrades in the MTG community, so maybe this is the forced push that is needed to leave that inconsistent trash behind.

Even though the cgc case looks fresh and super sleek the red is so in your face garish on the psa case that I like it for nostalgic reasons.

The point is consistency over time rather than design. PSA has the same overall design for 30 years.
