CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

No. I deliberately put 2 scratched cards in my sub of 25 cards to them to see if they noticed and one got a 9 and the other a 10.

Wait really?

Scratched cards can get 9/10 though if it’s minimal.

So what knocks the grade down?

Scratches affect the surface component of the grade. If edges, corners and centering is good, the card can still get 10/9 with a lil scratch, if eye appeal is good. Depends on the subjectivity of the grader.

Usually combination of imperfections in the above mentioned 4 areas will drop the grade. More imperfections, the lower the grade.

You can actually find quite many psa 10 slabs out there with minor scratches on the card.

I feel like I’ve seen older certification cards with a lot of whiting too

Well that is true, I’ve also seen 4, 5, 6 certs with bad whitening as well. You’ll probably find very bad whitening on some 7 certs as well. It depends on which grader is grading your card, not the cert.

Even though weak grades can be found in all eras of certs, I feel that the main majority of collectors have the perception that 2 certs and prior are the weaker bunch. It is obviously not true, but market perception do affect prices.

Collectors in the area I live in definitely thinks 2 certs and prior are weak. Can’t change their mindset.

Also consider that the strongest PSA 9s/10s from the 2 cert era or earlier are likely locked away in collections and will not see the light of day for some time. In comparison, almost every 6 cert or 7 cert card will be seen in auction, listed as a BIN, or “flexed” on social media.

This is an example of sampling bias where prospective buyers disproportionately see the less desirable older certs, while the “weaker” newer certs are overshadowed by the “stronger” copies from the same era. It creates a false narrative that the older certs are inherently weaker, but it may be that the stronger copies are just not available for purchase.

That looks good, I’m gonna need to buy a 10 to test and reholder to that since I only have lowly 9.5s

Get them while you can, clock is ticking
That pristine sceptile RS would look so good

Is it true that bgs is more lenient on grading for anything under a 10? So a PSA 6 is a bgs 10

They already started relabeling the stuff in the queue. This one sold on ebay June 19th (day before announcement)

Label looks really good

Yeah but more like 6-8 so long as it’s a 6 from dents not edgewear

So if I have a PSA 8 what are the chances it upgrades to a bgs 9?

:eyes:

Over half of my bgs 9 eseries collection is ex PSA 8. So greater than 50%. But eseries is way easier to grade than the rest of WOTC and I haven’t tried much on other eras except a dozen or so base cards. I’ve never crossed a PSA 8 base to bgs 9 base though usually they just get the 8.5 which doesn’t add much value
