For the record, I think the 9.5 change is a smart move despite it being pretty arbitrary.
This is too complicated, I now prefer the @qwachansey method of 10 if chansey and 0 otherwise
Number of Pristine Lugias at CGC has now gone from 6 before the announcement to 10. So definitely some already very high graded ones being crossgraded.
Unless the pop report is just jank right now and these are actually 9.5s that are already graded and being held back to become Gem mint 10s and they are just showing as pristine 10s right now.
Edit Looks like the number of 9.5 in the pop report also dropped. So that might be whatâs happening.
Maybe itâs a bit of tinfoil hat time but there were 8 graded 9.5 Raichu Base Set 1st Editions as the top grade on CGC not that long ago and it had been that way for quite a while.
Now there are 2 x 10âs added, whatâs the odds that those are people who were given a wee heads up about the change. I guess people could be speed grading but itâll be interesting to see how it changes.
They are migrating all the 9.5s to 10s in the pop report before July 11. I assume thatâs why it is. Why only 2 changed so far is beyond me though lol It could also be people simply sending in their 9.5s already and holding for a couple of weeks
Psa have given around 42% of cards graded with them a psa 10.
Cgc have only given around 23% of cards graded with them a gem mint 9.5, pristine 10 or perfect 10 combined.
Almost twice as easy to get a psa 10.
always has been
Unlike mtg, more than a few thousand ppl care about pokemon cards and using ânerd mtgâ grading standards doesnât sit well with normies that donât completely equate their lives with a set of cards.
Cgc is doing the equivalent of âcute nerdy girl takes off glasses and puts on makeup finally in senior yearâ movie trope and just hooked up with a jock csg on her way to become prom queen.
LMAOâŚthis is actually kinda accurate. CGC 9.5s were never âworseâ than PSA 10s (at least certainly not when the standards were stricter) â people just have a psychological barrier rooted in the number. I fell prey to it for a while, too. It took me a while to realize âwait, these 9.5s are actually in the same condition as the 10s â why the fuck am I paying 5x the price for a 10?â
Before I switched over, I remember winning a CGC 9.5 Gardevoir ex via auction for like $200. And the card was (and still is lol) gorgeous. Just a genuinely mint card. And not too long after that, because I was working on a PSA 10 set of Sandstorm, I purchased a PSA 10 Gardevoir ex for like $900. And it was weak as fuck. Like, why the fuck did I just pay 4.5x as much for a weaker condition card? It really just showed me how irrational my buying habits were and that I had to change course. Man am I happy that I did. I ended up selling my PSA 10 exs and holos and got like 5x the amount of mileage with CGC 9.5s.
Basically, as you said, the new CGC 10 is just the CGC 9.5 with its glasses off . It was a necessary move to compete with PSA 10s, frankly. All CGC was doing with 9.5s was shooting themselves in the foot. That said, I disagree with you that this is more than âjust a cosmetic change.â Itâs literally just a cosmetic change lol.
Cgc were tight as at giving out gem mint or better bit by bit they are relaxing and will fall roughly inline with psa eventually. You can take every variable going and it wouldnât close the 42% and 23% gap. Cgc will close that gap themselves.
IIRC, CGC had a 30% increase of 10s given after the pop report was released. What percentage was 9.5s? Basically the 9.5s were a soft grade scale change. The recent slab upgrade along with the 9.5 bump was the hard change
I think the stat you are thinking of is that CGC graded ~30% of all CGC 10s in the 5 weeks after they released the pop report. It meant the equivalent of 6x more 10s being given out.
Pre-pop report, 9s made up 36%, 9.5s 15% and 10s 1% of all cards graded
- 500% (5x more than a PSA 10)
- 400% (4x more than a PSA 10)
- 300% (3x more than a PSA 10)
- 200% (2x more than a PSA 10)
- 150% (50% more than a PSA 10)
- 100% (Same price as PSA 10)
- 90% (10% less than a PSA 10)
- 80% (20% less than a PSA 10)
- 70% (30% less than a PSA 10)
- 60% (40% less than a PSA 10)
- 50% (1/2 the price of a PSA 10)

In my whole collecting career this card was the nicest raw ex era card I ever owned but the monsters at Cgc didnât give me the 10 (graded a month or so after they launched). I think it would get the Pristine today
IG is hilarious. Cgc getting bad messages for releasing a vid of lots of famous YouTubers but no audio. Theyâve now put up a vid with audio of leonhart so far. Heâs a fan.
Oh croikey! Thanks for the correction. And wow, thatâs insane.
Yeah that has to be whatâs happening. All of a sudden there is 1 Pristine 10 1st edition jungle vaporeon. There has never been a CGC or BGS 10 of this card and only like 9 BGS 9.5 and around a dozen CGC (estimating how many were cracked and submitted elsewhere).
The number of 9.5s also went from 21 to 20.
We have seen multiple new 10s in promo vids, so they have yet to add the ânewâ 10 pop accounting and just using pristines as a holdover to count them
(Not like thereâd be many pristine 10s to dilute anywas lol. Also, they may not be counting them as real 10s and simply using them for temporary promotional purposes to show big boy holders the potential of their ungraded illustrator that might be the first actual gem mint 10 by a non-psa grader? Iâd assume some of the bigger influencers have sone primo rare cards to donate to the causeâŚ
Itâll be interesting as time goes on to see if people cross anything big over like a psa 9 mint pikachu illustrator moving over to a cgc 9.5 mint +. That kind of thing.
Okay so I just realized I had a support email from them replying finally to my email about why my Lugia were coming back showing no grades and it was what I was hoping/mostly expected. And yeah itâs what was being talked about above with them moving grades.
Two of the three new âpristineâ Lugia and the âpristineâ vaporeon are my 9.5s they just finished with. The certs on them show no grade because they arenât properly linked yet but should be in the next week or two. So this is only for people like me who had cards sent in but told them not to hold them back for the new labels and got 9.5s.
