Card rarity list - what's your opinion?

Hello all! Kob from TCG Collector here.

We have an internal list of rarities that have appeared across time where we try to list them from less to more rare. Of course, this approach has some issues as some rarities didn’t exist when others did, but we would still like to hear from more knowledgeable folks.

What are your thoughts?

I assume when you’re referring to rarity here, you’re referring to pull rate alone, not rarity as in availability? It feels funny seeing a Holo Rare V in the same tier as a level X.

Would also be curious if all eras of a rarity are being lumped together here.

For example, a rare holo from Jungle where you can expect one every 3 packs, vs. a rare holo today where you get multiple per pack.

Similar with Rare Holo ex, is that modern ex, or vintage ex?

Yes! Pull rate indeed.

Also yes, we try to list all rarities together independently of era - of course this means we can only compare a specific rarity to the ones when they were all available.
Given that a Rare Holo from Jungle would be compared to 3 other rarities, then we’re OK bundling them together. We also don’t have much choice as the rarity spans across multiple eras, so we need to keep that in mind as well.

Rare Holo ex are the Vintage ex, you can see those here.

Hi Kob! I’ve used TCG Collector in the past to check set lists and I love the ui for the site.

I’m not too familiar with every era’s pull rates, but I did notice one thing. During the XY era, "Rare Secret"s were about 1 in 72 packs. "Rare Holo ☆"s in ex era are also 1 in 72 packs.

EDIT for TL;DR

-rarity pull rates can change within an era/generation
-rarity pull rates can change across generations
-rarity changes effect the pull rates of other things when they are added/removed
-Just list rarity within each set, this ambition would end up being incorrect for some sets.

problem with this is, pullrates can and have changed across a generation. Even in S/V. S/V base and Paldea Evolved both had SIR pull rates of 1-2 per booster box. Obsidian flames and 151 nerfed this, though I’m not sure exactly since I got the charizard SIR because I even got to any booster boxes. But I know that by Paradox rift, it was 1 SIR per booster box. The next set, Temporal Forces halved this to 0.5 SIR per booster box, and continued until the end of the sets. A booster case would yield 3 SIRs. IR cards were always 2-4 per box, this never changed until the black and white special set where they were increased in pull rate due to the sheer number. I can’t speak to other generations how or when changes happened. So I wouldn’t do any sort of ranking based on pull rates. Just put them in order within their generation. Mixing up cross generational rarity doesn’t really work. I think gold star rarity is more easy to pull than sword and shield Vmax Alt Arts for example. Another thing is again, changes across generations. We now have holo rares only, no non-holo rares. And also we now get 2 reverse holos where one might not be. Then another situation is that of how, at least with early era reverse holos. The pull rates for reverse holo rare, uncommon and common match up. There are fewer reverse holo rares than reverse holo commons. The e-reader series also, set to set has totally different rarities and reverse holo rarities and systems. That alone is a nightmare to untangle and explain. Every time I want to buy cards from those 3 sets I have to remind myself what set does things what way. Even from just a binder perspective its confusing to lay it out.

While I understand the ambition here, I think its misguided, and you should just scrap it. Keep things simple. Don’t compare things that can’t be compared. List the official rarities, their symbols/letters and list them in order for each set. That is the best thing I would do, and make no comment on how easy that rarity is to get in a global sense.

Sorry if this isn’t even in the ballpark of the kind of response you sought. But that is how I see things.

Hello! Thank you so much for the feedback! We understand this isn’t the best approach, but we don’t agglomerate all the rarities for each individual set. Each expansion view only shows the rarities available in each, for example Temporal Forces as show below.

The tier list is used for the above as you can see, to organize the rarities in a way that makes sense. But it is also used in the filters when we show all the cards.

This as been the case for a long long time, so we don’t really want to change our approach, but I remembered that some folks might have other opinions on how to organize the rarities all together, despite the obvious challenge dude to the points you made above, that I agree with.

PS. we don’t really care about Reverse Holo rarities here, we treat them as variants as they share the rarity of the base card, so no need to go that deep.
