I recently sold a high end item on eBay for about $20K. The buyer said that they needed a few days to pay on Friday. This morning they sent me a message saying that eBay won’t allow them to make the payment with their debit card or Paypal. They were also having issues before the sale accepting a counteroffer I sent them. Is this because of the value of the item, or is it something wrong with their account? I have never had this problem before, granted this is my first time selling something this expensive. Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
It might also be your account, he’s going to have to contact ebay customer service to check on his end if everything’s okay, if it is it might be a restriction on your account to make sure that it’s not a fraudulent transaction. If you account has relatively low feedback and not many transactions that can be a red flag when ebay notices a 5 figure sudden purchase.
Could be that his bank is rejecting the payment because its a ‘large’ payment in a single transaction.
Could be insufficient funds in his account so paypal may deny.
Could also be a site glitch(?) I’ve had issues where payments will work on Chrome and not Safari/ Firefox etc.
Could be that his card is expired
I was having a similar problem with ebay, I had to link a credit/debit card to my paypal account and check out using paypal. I thought it was my credit card but when I contacted the bank they said every thing was fine.
That could be, but my account is 17 years old and has 400+ feedback so I’m thinking it may be on his end. My selling limit is set at about $150,000, and I’ve had about 2,000 transactions in the last year (only a few have been 4-figures though).
I had this issue recently and just moved to paypal. I assumed it was a buying limit on the buyers end but for whatever reason he was just completely unable to check out and pay for over 24 hours with no lucked even after a phone call to eBay.
The reason I feel like it may not just be his account is because this happened multiple times recently when I was buying stuff…could not check out no matter what and there’s some glitchy restriction put into place.

So you did the transaction/payment through Paypal and then manually marked the item as paid for on eBay?
@gengarguy in my instance the transaction just fully moved to PayPal.
In the past though I’ve had people pay as you described with PayPal or with a personal check separately (yes really) and then I marked as payment received on Ebay and shipped as normal.
I had this happen to myself as well, was on a mid four figure transaction on ebay. I´ve bought hundreds of things via paypal on ebay, some of them more expensive than this particular transaction. I called paypal and ebay, no one was able to explain exactly what´s going on. Oddly enough I was able to complete the purchase after 4 or 5 days with 0 issues.
take a deep breath, fistpump (because price is probably worth more now), and re-list it.
j/k though I’d just work with him for some fixed duration and if he can’t figure it out cancel and list again
I’ve personally had a ton of system errors on ebay over the years. From not being able to bid, to not being able to make offers to not being able to pay. Usually just message the seller and ask them if I can pay directly through paypal when it happens and it usually works out well.
I’d give your guy a couple of days to try to work it out, otherwise see if you can work out a deal outside of ebay, if not then just re-list it, no biggie.
New eBay scams and frauds are quickly being devised… what your situation sounds like is he wanted to buy time to secure the client to flip your item just waiting on the 100% confirmation before he commits (waits a few days, the time either current auctions break higher than your sale price / new listings sell for more / etc. ) I know of at least 10 listings from a few sellers selling high end stuff where this has been happening… and half the sales fell through, which worked out since the items just keep doubling every few days lol
