Booster Box vs. Heavy Packs to avoid volatility ?

If :whatshouldibuy: isn’t voted as the best e4 meme then idk what to say

I would lean towards booster boxes. Heavy pack prices follow booster box prices, not the other way around. Demand for booster boxes is also higher then heavy packs because heavy packs are not always a guarantee while a booster box is a booster box. You know what you’re getting. What i’m saying is that it is way easier to sell 1 booster box versus 12 heavy packs. The decision would depend on how much you are investing. If you can afford a box then it is the obvious choice. If you want to have a smaller position then a few heavy packs is the way to go.

I was thinking about sealed recently. If it keeps going up, how are you going to be comfortable to sell them. I came to the conclusion the only safe way would be in person, cash or transfer that cant be retracted. Obviously once the buyer is happy with the product on meet up. Is that going to be worth the hassle, time, travel costs etc?

As with any collectable or just any product in this day, it gets faked. Imagine if you do sell your investment after owning it for 5 years and its proven by the buyer that it was a fake/reseal all along. Think TCA had one shown on his YT recently.

I was thinking blisters were safe as they are less weighable and can be damaged when opened, but seeing them come apart damage free just after age making the glue seperate, and ending up with a perfetly re glueable front and card backing means I could put whatever I wanted back inside.

The more the prices of sealed rises, the more fakes will happen, means the harder it is to sell your product.

I’m a bit biased because I love the gym challenge set and want to get a box myself at some point. So I would say the box. My reasoning is because I’ve seen a lot opened on youtube the last year or so and there are only so many of them out there. So as the openings continue and the item because rarer and rarer, I think the value of it would go up a lot. Just my opinion though

It’s funny you say that because I’m really debating just liquidating my current sealed product that I got at 2018 prices now. Most of it is from PokeRev, so I trust that he sourced them well. I have worried that although price-wise, sealed product is less risky, but re-selling might be more complicated than say a bunch of graded cards.

On the flip side, if I get my trophy card, that might be even safer price-wise, but I’m sure that selling for the premium will take a while.

Got it! Yeah, stories like that make me nervous about even my current sealed product collection (most of which is from PokeRev, so I’m sure it’s legit). But I’m sure if I sit on my boxes and 1st ed packs for another 2-5 years, that should be secure in terms of price and scammers.

As long as you’re a patient and cautious seller, you should have zero problem selling sealed product. Others in this thread seem to disagree with me on this, but I wouldn’t make a subpar investment just because there seems to be less risk associated with selling it. Perhaps they disagree with me that set cards are a less safe investment than sealed product, though. Ultimately, my advice would just be to buy what you enjoy, though. If you are purely purchasing for investment purposes, you’d be better off putting your money in an ETF or mutual fund. But if you’re like me and genuinely enjoy having Pokemon cards/sealed product around, then just honestly assess what you’d prefer to collect and buy that.

Boxes are a better investment because they protect the cards. A 20 year old pack of cards shifting around in a box has a hard enough time being a PSA 10, but a loose single pack really shoots your chances.

Oh yeah. I mean if I went strictly what I wanted, I’d buy the Play Promo Umbreon (after trying to liquidate my current sealed product). Only thing with that is, 1. I would NEVER want to sell it., 2. Not sure how liquid it is compared to other stuff. Could be more, could be less.

The compromise I made with myself was that I could buy the stuff I wanted and hold for the long term (5 - 20 years), but I need to eventually sell. Haha I could do that with sealed product after enjoying displaying it for a while, but that shiny Play Promo BOII??? ooof! don’t know about that.

I think this new trend of heavy packs is nice. You can basically now get a booster box in smaller denomination. It’s like the 1 oz gold coin is sort of your standard, but since gold prices are around 1700/oz, having 1/2, 1/4 and the 1/10 oz denomination helps, since it makes it more accessible. Same with booster boxes. As these climb to 10k+, the heavy packs become a great alternative. I see a great future for heavies in the hobby.

I probably won’t be able to afford a 1st edition base box, but I can probably get a few heavy 1st edition base packs.

same here I just buy leftover opened boxes from stores. Booster boxes - the premium of the plastic wrap

Though few stores are trustworthy enough for this game I am playing

Booster box 100%

I’d say booster packs are definitely higher risk from the perspective of having to sell them and are subject to more potential fraud of buying a reseal or the buyer claiming it was resealed or not heavy. That being said, I could see the % increase being higher for packs due to the lower price and larger potential buyer pool.

My 2 cents, if you are going to be keeping it for 5 years, it does not matter which purchase decision you decide to go with.
NO one knows what any of the prices will be 5 years from now, except up
Go with something you like so no matter what the price becomes, you won’t get buyer’s regret and sell it before 5 years.

Go with the sealed boxes, has more potential ways to sell it, you can crack a box and sell heavies

I would say go sealed vintage booster box if a pure investment option is what you are looking for.
