Best set of all time

Well being the first English set is pretty important. It also has several of the most expensive set cards of all time. It’s about as scarce as English sets have ever been. Not great print quality. Tons of history and errors, iconic to everyone and their mom

Art is mid, charizard looks like his neck had been chiopractored by 2 tiktok workers that moved in opposite directions, most arts that weren’t a holo aren’t even memorable, in terms of meta, it was mostly hackman decks and blastoise (I don’t even know why anyone used it for their decks besides rarity), the art style was repeated for jungle and fossil, and while the conditional rarity was probably one of the best, it just dosent stack up in terms of art or style to even other wotc sets like neo destiny.

There is really only one answer. Hate it or love it but 1st ed/shadowless base set is the top set

As far as modern sets go, evolving skies was well crafted with Rayquaza and the eeveelutions (except espeon vmax is in fusion strike? Whaaa?) but if it had some pull rates I’d go for saying that it’s amazing and the best modern set.

That charizard art defines this entire franchise

It’s important to remember that the question posed in this thread is completely subjective. Opinions may vary widely based on our individual preferences and experiences.

the set still get trumped in every other catagory. All I’ve heard is chase cards and novelty, so unless you have some other reason that its the best, its safe to say that it’s still overrated.

It’s the anchor to more than one generation I think. Anyone young and old knows it.

My parents and grandparents know Charizard. They know arita’s Charizard. They don’t know or care about moonbreon gold stars lugia or anything else

It’s a cultural phenomenon that goes beyond Pokemon. It’s not nessisarily my favorite set or art but it’s the most important by far

As the defining card by a factor of 100x of the largest media franchise in the world it doesn’t really need anything else. I’m sure many mtg players wouldn’t say that a flower is the best art they’ve ever had, but nobody would say it’s not the most important

Who would have guessed that best set would be more controversial than worst set :joy::joy::joy:

So your saying base set charizard is more popular than pikachu?

I would personally say so, but to be fair it’s in the same set so it just helps the argument for base.

Arita’s Charizard is definitely more iconic than his Pikachu to the general public

Pikachu didn’t go mainstream until the anime, and I can definetly say that pikachu is more popular than base set charizard by a long shot.

I’m going to do a little test: I’m going to ask my friends, family, people I talk to on discord, and basically everyone I know about it, then I’ll put it on a spreadsheet and record the results. I’ll be measuring:

  • how long it takes for them to recongize it
  • if they recongize the pokemon, or the pokemon card, or both.
  • Can they tell me who the artist was.

Also it only really boosted in popularity in 2020 by logan paul buying a pikachu illustrator, which kinda says a lot.

I did not like what Logan Paul did to the tcg :sob::sob::sob: we had scalpers for 3 years… thankfully they gave up upon scarlet and violet.

Made every pokemon card shoot up, especially base set charizard.
