I love the alternative art of 1999-2000, but removing my bias towards it due to it’s rarity, I had to go with the OG unlimited. Its a masterpiece.

But which version of 1999-2000? :full_moon_face:

US print (far left). Last place is the Australian print, definitely the worst looking imo.

Personally feel the Base unlim background (black lines) works as a better aesthetic contrast since the unlim and 4th print charizards are quite “pale”.

For the 4th print background, honestly I would get 1st ed or shadowless. Looks superior in the saturated red hue

Yeah I agree with the shadowless background love the more red finish!

@c0ll3ct0r posted some pics in the thread

From these two options, I prefer the ©1999 version with black lines in the background.

But from the WotC Charizard versions, I would put them in this order: Shadowless > Base Set 2 > Base ©1999 > Base ©1999-2000. The colors of Shadowless look a lot better for Charizard in my personal option. And Base Set 2’s Cosmos Holo I prefer over the Galaxy holo for the remaining options. Just my 2c, though.

Out of the two, my eye gets drawn more to the 4th Print, due to the lighter vibrancy of the colours and the purple/maroon background emulating the 1st ed/Shadowless better.

Takes nothing away from how nicely Unlimited works too, of course!

That’s fair I agree with 1st ed and shadowless! also I like the base 2 cosmos style! but for me I dont know why but I view the black lines as a little tacky and less slick but thats just my own personal taste!

Yeah I agree! I find the 4th print looks more slick than the regular not sure I am a fan of the black lines and prefer the red lines for sure!

I recognise your username, If I remember rightly you were the user who sold me my first ever and only 1st edition base Charizard PSA 8! pretty sure I brought it for around ÂŁ1300ish back in 2017! sadly I sold it in the end in 2020 to fund my first house in which I still live in and am very happy

Why did 1999-2000 ever get coined 4th print? The story goes it was the 11th print run of base set. If we are going by 1st edition, shadowless, 1999 unlimited, 1999-2000 unlimited, there are actually other variants mixed in between, article incoming soon hopefully (not by me btw)

As far as I’ve always known, it’s because it was the fourth recognisable variant of Base that was identified; still even now, there are only the four obvious variants that don’t require looking into minutiae to identify: 1st ed, Shadowless, Unlimited & 1999-2000.

Everything else requires a loupe or research lab to identify.

Completely agree that requiring a jeweler loupe shouldn’t be an official variant.

My problem with using 4th print is we don’t use 2nd or 3rd print for shadowless and 1999 unlimited, 4th print is on it’s own island

Base 2 FTW!
