Base Set Cards Playability

Hey there, I was born in 1999 and never really got to experience the aspect of playability within base set. I know hitmonchan and Chansey were really good, but can someone provide me with any info as to which holo cards from base set were considered playable?

This site has all the info you’re looking for. Some of the cards weren’t recognized as playable until much later, but a lot of them were.

Blastoise, Alakazam and Venusaur were also played. Especially Blastoise with its raindance ability. But Hitmonchan and Electabuzz were the kings of base.

Yep, good 'ol haymaker decks were the bread and butter back then. Blastoise was super fun too, though haymaker could also run Muk to completely shut Blastoise down. Ah, good times!

Also, the top trainer cards of Base Set were broken. There was literally no reason not to play 4x Professor Oak, 4x Bill, 4x Super Energy Removal, and 4x Energy Removal. At least a couple of Gust of Winds and Pluspowers for good measure.

Thank you very much!

I love that site. Last year I built all 9 of the decks that have base, jungle, fossil. Its fun to play the old formats.

Blastoise, alakazam, electabuzz, arcanine, and most of the trainer cards are just broken.
