As a buyer, do you prefer auctions or fixed price?

I have never managed to get a good deal with an auction.

If I’m buying a modern single I do Buy It Now, sort by lowest, and pick the cheapest one with the best centering/condition in case I want to grade it in the future.

Any card that has a lot of listings, BIN is completely fine. Otherwise auctions are more economical.

In the UK, auctions often perform badly, so there are good chances to pick up deals. As a general rule, the more obscure/niche the item is, the happier I am to see it on auction.

If it’s something that doesn’t come up often and will attract competition, then gimme that buy it now, especially if it’s in Japan.

As a buyer, my favorite option is buy it now with best offer.

It means the seller is willing to negotiate and its usually easy getting to a middleground, if not you just move ahead.

In general, I prefer BIN. Over the past months, it’s been difficult because as some others have pointed out, every BIN listing for the cards I am after is usually anywhere from 30-100% more expensive than what said card is typically trading at. Many have best offers open, but they kinda just insta-decline if it’s more than like $20 off their list price. So, I’ve been finding some solid deals through PWCC lately. I thought I preferred eBay’s auction model, but for whatever reason, I find I have way better luck with scoring good prices with PWCC. I always end up snipe-bidding too low and losing out on eBay, it all happens so fast lol. I know auctions get some people, but I’m usually pretty good at setting a limit and ducking out if it goes too high. I’ve certainly missed some auctions on eBay where items I wanted went for a steal, plus I agree that following them for a whole week and right to the end is a huge time dump, especially for PWCC. These weekly auctions had me lurking around for hours on Sunday nights for a while there. I also feel like I’m always running into issues with eBay; maybe this is just a recent thing, but I swear, pretty much every order I’ve made off eBay in the past two months has had something go wrong, whether it’s cards coming not as described, damaged, missing items, etc. I get that eBay offers solid buyer protection, but it’s such a hassle to have all the money tied up, have to return shit, have to try and get your imports and duties you paid back from FedEX, etc. eBay feels like I’m paying a premium to waste my time and get jerked around by shade lords these days.

Anyway, yea, I prefer fixed price, but my lack of money has been forcing me into auctions lately lol.

100% this. Nothing warms the heart like a best offer invite.

The one that costs less.

By ā€œlessā€ I mean, lower than the average market price, and above all the last one sold.

I tracked a couple 1st Edition Shining Charizard auctions (1 raw, 1 graded) yesterday and the day before on ebay and was blown away that the raw card sold at a pretty decent premium over the slab:

I think the last couple raw zards I saw in a similar condition were listed at BIN for almost $2,000 less. Auctions are such a wildcard lol.

This is wack. This is also one of the last two cards I need for Neo Destiny, so I’d like to take this moment to say (raising my voice conspicuously) this card is really overvalued and should be worth less.

I will Buy It Now if it’s a little overpriced, as long as I think it’s still market underpriced. Otherwise I am the 2nd Highest Bidder Auction King. Without me most of these sellers would be 20% poorer. Or I’m just good at finding shilled auctions, which is really why I’m always coming up #2.

This is the last card I need to complete mine :sob:

Nowadays just buyout. When I buy all the FA Supporter and Character Rares in a new set for my collection I filter on Buyout usually, although I do look at the auctions and Best Offer options in case the lowest buyout is a bit high to my liking (although in most cases I then just wait 1-1.5 week for prices to lower a bit before hitting a buyout after all - e.g. with the Machamp V from the latest English set).

For the missing Pikachu in my collection, I don’t have any specific filter. I doubt I’ll be able to find the 10 I’m missing on eBay at this point though. But in the past I bought both by winning auctions or hitting Buy it now buttons.

I prefer auctions where my opponents stop bidding against me.

I prefer to snipe auctions using my max bid. And I’m usually always willing to pay more for what I want compared to everyone else I end up competing against. They should know I’m going to snipe the auction and save themselves the time and me the money, and simply not bid.

Either way they are walking out empty handed. But it’s certainly no fun for me when the bid price 10x’s over the last 30 seconds of the auction.

Grabbed that card in a 9 a few months back. Luckily I just saved the Holo energy for last lol
