Acceptable grades for vintage wotc cards?

What do you consider a good grade for wotc holos/cards?

I feel as though 10s especially for base set and other popular wotc sets are pretty out of reach. Even some 9s.

Do you think an 8 is too low? How about a 7?

PSA is the company of the graders

For investment purposes, I usually hesitate to include stuff less than an 8. And even 8s I try to limit to just big cards.

Just because of the amount of cards out there and the fact that getting an 8 from a raw card isnt super hard so they can jump in pop pretty fast. I imagine there is a large amount of base 1st ed zards out there raw that would get an 8 easily, but the quantity that would hit 9s that are currently raw is probably very very low at this point

So even an 8 isn’t a good grade for vintage

I buy and own anything from PSA 5 to 10 for vintage WOTC. Binder grade cards are still desirable to many collectors who don’t collect slabs and this can be anything from PSA 5-8 condition range usually for most people. 9s and 10s are always going to have a lower supply, so they can be potentially a strong investment over time assuming it is a popular/desirable card and that supply is constantly in demand. A lot of slab collectors like seeing “Mint” or better on the labels. I know personally for my favourite cards I’ll try and buy a 9 or 10 if I can (usually a 10).

However, another way to look at it is anything less than a 10 is a flawed card, and so if you’re just collecting and can tolerate a bit more flaws, does the grade really matter as long as it’s acceptable to you personally? For example, I’ve collected PSA 5-8s for my binder sets mainly. Some of them have a good amount whitening, but they also have clean holo fronts with good centering. I personally could care less about the whitening because I only look at the front of card and they look just fine in a binder set to me. This also saves me a lot of money compared to buying only Mint or better copies in the long run.

I think I’m a little torn on how to move on with my collection. I’ll make a bother thread asking for opinions.

Mods you can delete or lock this thread. Sorry I made two threads.

Thank you

I wouldnt say that its not a good grade. Its still a good grade but imo, its generally not a “safe investment grade” just because of the ability for heaps of new raws to be graded 8.

Its my own opinion though and I want to see what everyone else thinks. Its a topic I have been wrestling with recently as well since I am looking to start new collecting goals after finishing my main goals from before.

Maybe I am way off, Idk.
I collected 8s for a long time but it was not really giving me the chase excitement I wanted

I just go for what i can afford relative to the card. If i can only afford a psa 3 crystal charizard then thats what im going for.

I think 8s are okay for most 1st Edition WOTC holos (maybe not stuff like Jumpluff and Muk, but most of them), but as far as Unlimited is concerned, 8s definitely don’t hold that much value unless it’s something like a Base Set Charizard. Just my opinion, of course.
