$4,000,000 PSA 9 Pikachu Illustrator Sale - Confirmed Unpaid

As many of you know, someone hit buy it now on my 4M PSA 9 Pikachu illustrator listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/362931142416

Since I’ve received so many messages I’m just going to make a thread. The buyer hasn’t paid, I doubt they will. I’ve had this up for years as a showcase. It’s pretty disappointing if eBay allows people to hit BIN and not fulfill payment. They have bid restrictions for over 100k but I’m not sure if that applies to Buy it now.

Anyway that’s the current status and most likely result. If something changes I’ll update.

September 18th Update, the card was not paid. The sale was closed out on ebay.

If it does sell, whats next for you @smpratte?

What plans await, or what will you do with the money?

Awesome card, and I hope it gets paid.

We would never see or hear from him again. smpratte would be the Bigfoot of the Midwest. Was there ever an smpratte or did we collectively imagine his presence in our heads?

I wish I could allow myself not to work!

@eievui Honestly I’m not thinking that far ahead. I’ve sold Illustrators through ebay before, and this has none of the positive characteristics.

How long before we see people on IG/Tiktok making content about this being sold?

And not disclosing it wasn’t paid for.

It’s already started!

The Pokemon market rumor mill is one of the worst across all collectible hobbies. Nobody does diligence in confirming sales. It’s all hype, FOMO, hype, FOMO. :exploding_head: :collision: :volcano:

I just saw another Illustrator owner sharing the sale as paid, and he seems really happy about it.

So someone absolutely did this to generate hype.

SMH.

At least this situation might help attract a few new members to the forum!

This reminds me of when an illustrator “sold” on Fanatics Collect for $720,000 and was peddled on IG as a real sale. It was later relisted and confirmed to be a fake sale.

Or literally 90% of the initial headline sales we’ve seen on most cards in the past year.

Lots of manipulation > inflated demand > actual demand

Fingers crossed the sale gets finalized :crossed_fingers: It would be a historic moment!

you have an entire subreddit thinking its a real sale: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokeInvesting/comments/1nfdn6e/the_holy_grail_psa_9_pikachu_illustrator_sells/?sort=new

wouldnt even bother trying to correcting them if youve got modern junk to dump

so my takeaway from here is that any card with the green sold text on ebay means that is the new market price for the card, even if the seller says its unpaid.

this will increase the motivation of ppl pumping cards on ebay consigments to all time highs, since they know dinguses on reddit and instagram will believe it :frowning:

theres lots of stuff that get “sold” on pwcc that they repost on their ig years later without the date it was sold

Maybe it’s just a coincidence but there have been TONS of cards I’m keeping an eye on on PWCC, that aren’t getting paid for and are being relisted, sometimes multiple times. Haven’t noticed it on eBay quite as often as PWCC.

“New acquisition by Secret LLC. This item is owned by one of our members, not myself. Any purchasing inquiries reach out to 1-800-SecretLLC.” from the @secretmudkip account on instagram

with pwcc u might have to bid on the same item 4 times until ur bid actually sticks

Wonder if the buyer is moving crypto to fulfill the purchase.
