2020 top moments in the hobby

Seeing some AMAZING cards throughout the first four Sword & Shield series sets and being super optimistic about the next two years!

Uri Geller giving “permission” for more Kadabra (and Abra) cards in the future is pretty cool also!

2020 has just been off the charts in sheer number of big events alone, so much so that I have lost count and track of many notable occurrences that in previous years would have stood out, particularly the frequency and record price shattering sales and auctions for almost any high end card you can name.

I do feel that Logan Paul’ live stream in particular does stick out as a bit of a watershed moment. It was just such a perfect storm from my perspective. I do believe that if it wasn’t Logan Paul then it would have just been someone else eventually, but credit where credit is due it could have easily been amateurishly produced into a dud but it was done in style.

Whether it was Logan Paul or the natural hype of the hobby helped by Covid, it seems like more people entered into it than ever before; the good, the bad and the ugly. I draw a lot of parallels with the 2016 Pokemon Go era and it makes me happy knowing how many people stayed in the game from then and believing the same will happen this time.

T17 mania. It was so big when it first happened but is now microscopic compared to everything else that happened this year lol. What a ride it has been.

So glad for her success on insta! The Aoki charity stream was also a top moment.

Pokémon cards starting to become “cool” again. Pre-2016 whenever I’d tell friends I collect Pokémon cards they’d say “interesting, I remember those from when I was a kid”. After Pokemon Go they say “I like Pokémon too, do you play Pokémon Go?” After the Logan Paul boom they say “Nice! What are your rarest cards?”

A personal moment was deciding I want to quit lurking and regularly spend time engaging in / developing the hobby!

This. Logan Paul, for better or worse, became synonymous with Pokemon cards for a brief time. I think that ultimately his influence will just be remembered as a blip on the radar. Gary being in the same video as Lana Rhodes is something I personally will never forget because it just seemed so… bizarre.
