1st Edition PSA 9 Jungle Prices

Hey all,

was wondering who was watching those PSA 9 1st Ed Jungle Holo auctions that ended last night? Seller was ultrarareseeker.

The Jolteon (9) sold for $611.99… I reached out & he said the item was paid for. The Scyther, again, in a 9 - auctioned for $380 (paid for).

Even the Clefable 9 went for $202.50. It’s just crazy right now! The Vaporeon went for $355 & I just saw another sold right away for $450.

Unbelievable - glad I bought these awhile back.

Was watching them, still not convinced there wasn’t shill bidding going on. Also new entries into collecting going all hyped up full tilt gangbusters is a thing that can, will, does happen and is merely a whitecap in the ocean. Very tough to determine what’s the new normal and what is going to be corrected later. In auctions, it only takes two. And hype, like fear, is contagious for the auctions and next bidders that follow. Add in fomo and we have emotions influencing markets and prices, as it ever was. But the best indicator I like seeing is the good old immeasurable OPTIMISM! Love it.

Those are rookie numbers, crank them up!

This makes booster boxes very cheap though… Buy buy buy!

So wild! I was the one who sold the Vaporeon for $450. The stimulus checks just flooded in and believe there is a large surge of uneducated buyers/collectors. Hey, they could be right, but I bought that Vaporeon two weeks ago for $162.

Pokemon is wicked exciting right now! Not going to lie, I am loving the intensity lately, haha.

Would be surprised if next sold listing on eBay for 1st ed jungle booster box is $5k, they should not be the same price as fossil and team rocket, in my opinion.

Edit: meant to say wouldn’t be surprised.

I watched those auctions too. I felt like I overpaid a bit when I picked up a PSA9 Jolteon for 200 dollar recently, but I guess I wasn’t lol.

These PSA 9 prices make no sense in relation to the price of a 1st edition Jungle booster box ($4.5k). Something will have to correct.

I think the correction will be twofold - these PSA 9 prices will fall but the price of the box will go up.

Are there even boxes available right now for 4.2-4.5k on the market?

I agree. It’s like they aren’t even looking for PSA 10’s as a Flareon 10 is only $600.

Yes, but do keep in mind that the pop for PSA 10 1st edition Flareon is far higher than any other holo in the set. There are 164 of them despite the fact that 13 of the 16 holos in the set have pops under 100, including 5 that have pops under 70.

A PSA 10 1st edition Snorlax sold recently for $2.4k and that wasn’t the only one that’s sold for over $2k. A Clefable recently sold for $1.9k. I think a Vaporeon could sell for around $3k.

1st edition base is at risk of being out competed at this rate by jungle and fossil! you can pick up psa 10 1st ed base holos for around the same price!! surely there will be some kind of correction either side

Oh, I know. I just enjoy seeing they would pay more for a PSA9 Jolteon, which has nearly 3x more pop than the PSA 10 Flareon.

IMO, I think WOTC 10’s are going to have another boost in a few months when this new group starts reading up.

Damn… that’s a quick profit. It’s just insane right now. I do agree there has to be some uneducated / new collectors flooding in because the growth of these prices is simply unsustainable. It’s sort of the perfect storm for sellers because the supply simply isn’t on the market for these cards right now so these newbies probably think this is their only shot to grab these cards. For the price of that Jolteon, you could buy a 1st ed base Mewtwo in a 9.

The Jungle box either has to skyrocket or these PSA prices have to see some type of correction.

Totally agree. Fossil has a lot of duds in it while Jungle seems to have better pulls overall & their appears to be less availability of boxes compared to the other two you mentioned. I don’t have any boxes but am REALLY considering picking up a 1st ed jungle box.

I believe there’s one at auction for $4,500 right now. The others are asking around $8k. But who knows, with these prices the boxes might be worth that soon.

There’s a huge influx of new collectors.

If it’s based truly on technicals I get why Jungle, rocket, and fossil are about the same price. If you look at PSA 10 to 9 ratio, Jungle is at a 19.59% ratio (granted I know regrades happen, but bear with me). So in broad terms, means a pack fresh holo pull from jungle probably has about a 19.59% chance to get a 10 (again, this is broad but as good a measure we have). Fossil is at 25.54% and team rocket 27.95%. Which makes sense since the higher value cards in jungle are offset by the chances that they actually grade a 10, which pulls the box down a little. I’m going to make a video with revised calculations on all 1st ed boxes, it’s pretty interesting all the stuff that you can see in the numbers. Gym challenge has a 40.29% PSA 10 ratio, kind of crazy.

On March 28th, The Breakfast Club (radio show hosts with podcast on youtube with 4.3+ million subscribers) posted a podcast with Gary Vaynerchuk. I’m sure most of you know him, but he has a massive following himself and is pretty heavily invested into collecting graded sports cards. In this podcast he talks a lot about the value of sports cards going up, huge market, the value of PSA, what PSA grading means to the cards/how it works, just a lot of very informational stuff on the sport cards hobby and why it is such a great time to get in and how it’s booming right now. But then he goes onto say 2-3 times throughout the podcast that “Pokemon is even bigger than sports right now”…

Now he just went on to boost and promote the value of sports cards like crazy, like he always does, but then goes onto say Pokemon is an even bigger market for collecting/investing than sports… I think that is a huge statement and definitely has helped with the influx of people buying in the market right now, and the reason for the higher prices for cards as well. I think he increased the demand exponentially with that statement, especially because very many people listen to what he has to say because he is “right” about a lot of things in terms of investing and where people’s attention is going towards.

All of that mixed with some nice government funding & everyone being home and having lots of time to go online and shop = more sales for Pokemon lol
