Your Favorites-->Neo Shinings, Crystals or Gold Stars?

Because the cards look better without it.

Crystals > Shinings > Stars. If every shining was like Tyranitar and every Star like Charizard might have different opinion, but as a complete set I think Crystals are nicest – no complete bores like Shining Steelix

Gold stars have my vote. They were the chase cards in my day. Although I collected since Base, my parents never bought me cool cards or even packs (I mainly got preconstructed decks).

It wasn’t until the EX era that I started buying my own packs and actually pulling decent cards.

Plus that artwork…

I like them all as they are all unique in their own ways, but I have to say Gold Stars are my favorite. I love the artwork on them
and Masakazu Fukuda in general is one of my top favorite artists in the hobby. I never had the luck to pull one myself from a pack so they kept kind of a “mystery” for me. Only lately I’ve bought myself some Japanese Gold Stars to feed some of that lack I used to have, but also because those definitely are some of the most amazing cards ever made in the hobby. Rayquaza and Charizard are just great examples of how well they are made and how awesome the whole concept of Gold Stars is in general. They never were playable cards but I think they were perfect for collectors.

As beautiful as they are, I sadly don’t have that much nostalgia for Shinings and Crystals as I never opened a Neo or E-Series pack believe it or not. That’s because Pokemon cards completely disappeared from stores in my city for some years and started to appear again during the ex-era. I have a similar history with @pkmnflyingmaster when it comes to the ex-era in general. Crystal Charizard and Crystal Lugia are both so pretty though.

well that’s a tough one.

In terms of nostalgia:
Shinings are my favorite, those were the best thing out there when I was a little kid.

In terms of artwork:
Crystals, really love the holo’s and artwork on them, also like the Ereader card designs.

Collectible wise:
Goldstars, 27 of them, lot’s for me to collect

Overall I would say I love the crystals the most because out of the 3, the artwork appeals to me the most.

Shinings > Gold Stars > Crystals

Shinings on top because that’s where alternate color Pokemon in the TCG started, Gold Stars in the middle because they brought back the trend, and Crystals in last because I don’t find them to be particularly special at all.

As someone who got into Pokemon in the EX era, the Gold Stars have all the nostalgia for me so they are my number one. They are also the first time that the Pokemon art exceeded the normal art box and all the art was done by the same artist (That art style makes it look amazing when they are displayed together).

Then I would just judge the other two by art, and the crystals have such great art that I think that trumps the cool effect/style that the shinings were done in.

Is “none of the above” an option?

I’ve always been bias towards the shining but I love crystal golem too. And I’m just now looking into gold stars after shying away for a long time. Shining is still the best for me though.

I’d have to say goldstars. the “shiny” form of the pokemon is so much more obvious with them. I also love the aspect of the card being so simple but yet so unique with the pokemon actually coming out of the border of the artwork.

I also love shinings but I just can’t get into crystals… Some nice artwork but i really dont think they should be worth what they are. You can 110% pass me with that $2k ho oh and id just buy 3-4 psa 10 gold stars

pokemon snap cards

I’d say Shining (Shining Charizard and Tyranitar are majestic) and because of the nostalgia.
Anyway I love gold stars too because they have a great artwork too, a new complete and different style and as someone said they brought back the trend.

Crystals are nice i can’t say the opposite, nice artworks but they don’t have the “wow” thing imho.

Gold Stars for me over the others, by a large margin:

  • Low PSA 10 pops for most of them
  • Unique “Gold Star” labeling/moniker…we all know what a “Gold Star” card is
  • First cards to have Pokemon pop out of/exceed the art border
  • Consistent illustrator/designs across all the EX sets
  • Large number of desirable Pokemon included
  • Shiny Pokemon

Neo Shinings for me are second as I don’t care much for the Pokemon selection or most of the art…and Crystals have zero appeal for me. IMO Gold Star PSA 10s are the only (English) cards I value over 1st Edition Base Set PSA 10s.
