Your biggest value increase before/after grading or time passing

I’m doing some informal research here, and as the title suggests—what cards have seen your largest value increases after grading or time passing? Whether it’s from an actualized sale, recent sales history, or simply your own expectations, I’d love to hear about your experiences.

I understand that discussing value isn’t the only aspect of this hobby, and there’s no shortage of “invest bros” who are only in it for monetary gain. However, many of us still find the topic of value appreciation interesting, especially when it comes to graded cards!

With that in mind, please share:

  1. Card name/information

  2. The price you paid for the raw card (or if you pulled it yourself, feel free to mention that)

  3. Resulting grade and the value/increase in value. If it is pop 1 with no other sales, you can mention recent relevant sale prices.

  4. Where you acquired the card (if not pulled)

  5. Service level used with the grading company

  6. Number of cards in the grading order

  7. Number of previous submissions with the grader

Questions 5 - 7 are meant to dive deeper into the psychology of grading high-value or desirable cards at specific companies.

To many questions but I just popped in to say I pulled the latios latias alt art from team up out of a $1 dollar store pack. Sent it in and got a 10. It’s worth like $2200 right now so at least a $2100 profit for me

No worries, the questions are mostly all optional for the thread and simply there to glean extra information from this topic!

Thanks for your reply! This is exactly the type of information im interested in basically! What card, what you paid, the resultant grade/value. Thanks!

Alola friends - SM promo 401

Purchased Sealed box for MSRP $200 in 2019. Card had a value of about 100$ at the time.

Graded a PSA 9. Sold in 2023 at peak waifu bubble for $5000

Pokemon Center JP Website. Bought two boxes in the same order.

Sent in bulk submission in 2020 I think.
The card in PSA 9 was likely worth about $650 at the time of grading so I likely got up charged a bit.

Used Graded Gem US with a submission of about 110 cards.

My first submission.

Probably my best post-Covid example, bought this Kyogre in 2021, submitted in Economy which I believe was the $50/card tier and only one PSA had open at the time and had lottery spots for 5 card orders. I have 40+ individual PSA submissions at this point!

Japanese Extra Battle Day promos: 395/SM-P Acerola; 396/SM-P Guzma; and 397/SM-P Lillie.

Lillie: 1,650.00 USD
Acerola: 1,080.00 USD
Guzma: 800.00 USD
(total: 3,530.00 USD)

All three PSA-10 (even though I was expecting two 10s and a 9 for the Acerola).

All three on eBay. Guzma from one seller, Acerola + Lillie from another seller.

Standard, through middleman service LudkinsCollectables UK. Total costs of grading + shipping back to me were 125.40 GBP (163.28 USD with the conversion rate at the time). And despite the 10s, I didn’t had to pay any additional grading fees later on.

These 11.

One. I’ve only graded with PSA (through Ludkins UK) two times. (And I’ve graded once with BGS through a Swedish middleman, and once with PCA through a French middleman. Never graded anything else personally.)

Not sure about their values right after I received them back from grading (which was roughly 3.5 months after I had send them in).
I did sell the trio for 150,000.00 USD in mid-2023, through. So I’d say quite a big value increase. An increase of 146,306.72 USD to be exact.

  1. SM080 Lillie from the Lillie/Cosmog Box
  2. Paid $125 in Feb 2022.
  3. Graded it in OCT 2022 and it received a PSA 10. It was about a $200 card in a PSA 10 at the time. I sold it during the Waifu surge in June 2023 for $4500 in auction on eBay via consignment.
  4. Purchased from eBay.
  5. It was one of the bulk specials at the time.
  6. There was about 25 cards in the order. It was a mix of modern and vintage.
  7. I’ve submitted about 4 orders to PSA prior to this one.

submitted 144 cards to PSA.
cost is about $2500 (most of the cost were to grade / upcharges.

Let the hate begin.

Holy hell :flushed: I know where I’m going to for my card speculation advice.

What was the card?

One that comes to mind from last year was the glossy CoroCoro Jirachi, Bought for about £8, graded a 10, sold immediately to a Chinese buyer for £400. Not easily replicable, most raws you find will be damaged in some way, and the 10 is tough on glossy coros. My best to date was a 1st ed Neo Lugia, bought raw for £150 in 2019, graded a 9, sold for £4.2k in 2021.

It is the whole sub value. The sub is from 1 set. (vintage)

Okay can you list at least some of the cards? The original question was asking for specific examples.

I love this story.

The fact you sold them almost at their absolute peak and they’ve had such a dramatic fall since, makes it all the more incredible.

The issue I see with the thread is that most of the big value differences are more to do between comparing time point A → B than going from ungraded → graded.

I have a few examples I could share but most of them are because I bought the card raw and waited a few years before grading.
