Sprigatito is outrageously popular in Japan
I think it’ll take years longer for the younger generation to figure out what their favorites have been. They way I look at it, every new Pokémon generation is someone’s introduction to Pokémon.
I was introduced in 1999 during the craze and I have an extreme bias to Kanto. I remember when Neo cards were coming out and feeling so betrayed that there were more Pokémon (I was very young at the time). I’m sure years to come, someone’s first introduction will be Sword and Shield and have a fan favorite to emerge with nostalgia .
I’d also add Lechonk to that gen 9 list
Am I invisible to you?!
I thought it was just me who loved Lechonk.
Is this the legendary Le Shonk?!
Ykw, lets go over the 251 pokemon who need MORE love, just to see how biased this really is.
Kanto:
-Dewgong
-Hypno (Ik Hypno’s Lullaby But Come on man.)
-Jynx (Come on man it was kicked out of its trio.)
-Venomoth
-Farfetch’d
-Dodrio
-Tangela
-Seadra
Johto:
-Ledian
-Xatu
-Yanma
-Granbull
-Quilfish
-Mantine
-Piloswine (I forget this is gen 2.)
-Corsola
(Will edit when i think of some more im in class rn.)
How has Sylveon not been mentioned?
Rayquaza has been getting a lot of love lately in both the TCG and non-TCG which isn’t surprising.
I’d disagree with the premise of this post, I think there are a ton of newer Pokemon from gens 4+ that are iconic and will continue to be popular. This thread was great for talking about it:
As I noted in that thread, there’s a linear relationship between age of a Pokemon and how “iconic” people think it is, not necessarily because of anything objective, but because of nostalgia and time passing.
Lots of newer Pokemon are already hugely popular as others have pointed out.
Definitely will be more I think. Then you also have the waifu/trainer types that have gotten really big in valuation and popularity. Who would have guessed just a few years ago we’d see a Lillie promo card fetching $100K+? And so I think it’s entirely possible we’ll continue to see more popular Pokemon & associated characters over time, it’s all very persuasive to me.
I’m more of a Fidough guy than a Lechonk. I’m surprised they didn’t make a Special Delivery Lechonk considering they made Bidoof.
Only time will tell if another Pokémon can reach the pop culture heights of Charizard, Pikachu, or Eevee. I think it’s incredibly unlikely. I can however see some new Pokémon vying for a smaller role amongst fans who are a bit more into the franchise. Pokémon like Mimikyu, Dragapult, and Tatsugiri are a few examples of Pokémon I can see having some longevity with fans.
I think another interesting question is does Pokémon even need any new Pokémon to become super popular? Or is the franchise already so good at appealing to such a wide variety of people who can each have their own specific favorites? They certainly seem to be content with Charizard and Pikachu at the moment.
I’m also just now realizing that Dragapult still doesn’t have an alt art and that is a crime.
Stop creating new pokemons, they’re forgettable and weird in design.
Instead, create and continue to release new gold stars cards for pokemons which don’t have a gold star card yet; some examples like Lugia , Darkrai
, Blastoise
, Milotic
…etc.
Don’t say it’s not possible, they had released Greninja few years ago.
every year there is a poll held in japan on which pokemon is the most popular. the results are always shocking to us westerners and our biases towards stonks.
I assume, that the reason for this is, And this is just a theory, but the japanese are going to like the designs of pokemon NOT from japan, rather than from japan, as it feels more unique to them, and Westerners will like the designs from Japan, more than lets say, gen 5, because For some reason, us westerners are obsessed with japanese culture, idek man-
i’m not sure i understand what you’re saying. like, i think i do, but it doesn’t make any sense to me, so i’m assuming i don’t
I think the answer to this question is “yes, obviously.”
Giratina is gen 4 and already busting in to the “extremely popular” category. I would say it’s close to Rayquaza at the moment, and very possibly could match or exceed it in the future.
My view of current top 5 for English TCG is definitely
- Charizard
- Umbreon
- Rayquaza
- Mew/Mewtwo
- Pikachu
Charizard is undoubtedly number 1. Between the next 4, I don’t really have any particular order. Gun to my head I’d probably say Pikachu is number 2, but between Rayquaza, Umbreon, Mew, and Mewtwo, I don’t know an order. I would say that Mew and Mewtwo occupy the same slot. Both are very popular, but they seem almost interchangeable if asking people for a list of their top 5, 10, etc.
I think something to note is that being popular does not mean that it will translate to TCG prices/popularity.
It’s clear that the TCG demo is skewed.
150,000 votes is what I would call a substantial sample size but…
Meowcasra is top?!
The JPN market’s tastes and preferences are totally different from ENG market’s, I should say!
