When I returned to the pokemon hobby, my first purchases were:
-commons and uncommons, base set (both locally and from Troll&Toad)
-base2 charizard
-masaki golem
Everything was so affordable back then, I miss those days

When I was 10 years old, I saved up chore money, birthday money, and holiday money and bought myself an unlimited shadowed holo Zard from base set to complete my full set. That was my first ever. As an adult, my first purchase when I got back into the hobby was the Rayquaza V and Vmax alt art’s raw from Evo Skies.
Im not entirely sure, i think most of the first cards i got were given to me or traded. I do remember getting some ex team magma vs team aqua packs in my local store. That must have been around 2004
My mom bought me base set packs as a kid, but I won’t count that.
When I re-entered the hobby in late 2020, my first purchase was 3 Evolutions booster packs from a streamer on Twitch lol
My first self funded Poke purchase was this baby:
Did not care for the 2020 vintage hype at all. Those were good old days for me that was in my past and the bubble prices were stupid.
Seeing that Vaporeon though blew my mind. Between the style and the neon teal, blue, and maroon/pink colors and Japanese texture I had no idea (at the time) Pokemon cards had art like that (the last block I had opened from was early ruby sapphire era)
Other than random starters, a lot of hoenn pokemon, and legendaries I’ve been a huge fan of the eeveelutions (other than Glaceon and Leafeon who are meh to me)
Coupled with the fact that Vaporeon is my 3rd favorite eeveeloution design wise (Espeon and Umbreon are first and second) I was now back into collecting
The Vaporeon VMAX and Espeon VMAX were huge art chases in getting me back in as well (not a huge fan of the Umbreon V (meh) and VMAX (Umbreon looks fugly) alts from Eevee heroes)
It was also nice seeing Leafeon get a card that actually looked amazing for the first time (talking about the V alt, hate the VMAX alt)
The Vaporeon V is easily not only one of my favorite modern cards but one of my favorite cards of all time.
I’ve been lucky enough to get 3 variants of the card (Japanese, English, and the English 3 square corner card in the middle of the raw ones) that all have different hues of color. Gonna pick up the trad and simplifed chinese one soon to see how they compare color value and texture wise.
Here is a better look between the color difference of the 2 English copies with the error variant on the right
Also got the 2 variants of the US promo boxes sealed (2021 and 2022 copyright dates)
I went ham on the boxes and bought 24 at retail when they came out. Opened 12 and gave away 6 and kept six sealed (one copyright year of each set)
While not big on sealed these are the only American products that (since my return in 2021) look like true display pieces from my aesthetic standpoint. Most packaging for US product ranges from meh to trash imo.
This is the only card I have been obsessed with getting various ones over. I will stop chasing it when I get the 2 chinese variants.
Thanks to that slab purchase I was interested in looking back and picking up old cards I used to have and loved (that are affordable) and pick up cards with amazing art from the 2nd half of the ruby/sapphire era all the way to the end of the sun and moon era that I had originally missed out on.
As a kid with my own money i think it was pretty much base set - team rocket holos from flea market since those were what i cared the most. Interestingly i think as an adult my first purchase was base set koffing since it was the only common or uncommon i was missing from those sets
