Doesn’t seem like the smartest financial decision to buy packs in breaks, but its no surprise that the demand is there considering the basis of the hobby has a gambling element (purchasing packs to open and try get a good card)
Some people just like to be part of the experience but they are incredibly bad value. People buy with emotions and make dumb financial decisions. If they were slightly under market value (since the opener is usually going to make a profit from the content anyway), then it would be more fair but I realise that they don’t need to make it cheap because people will always pay over market value to be part of the experience and the shoutout.
I love watching some of them but my only issue is that sometimes they come across as being presented as a money making opportunity, and most people aren’t well educated on the actual odds of pulling something worth more than the pack being very low so most people are going to be disappointed.
For example, paying $1k for a Base pack is insanity because there’s a high chance of ending up with $10 of cards (raw) and a very low chance of ending up with a PSA 9/10 Charizard/Blastoise or PSA 10 Venusaur worth more than the pack. I would much rather buy $1k worth of Base set holos than one pack that might not have one
I don’t watch much Pokémon stuff on YouTube but I am a little obsessed with watching people play Super Mario Maker. Whenever the more popular creators (100k+ subscribes) live stream themselves playing the game it’s always baffled me seeing how many people donate real money to them just to get them to read out some donation message on stream (or have some robot voice read the message out). That’s aside from people paying to subscribe to their content.
One of the more popular creators I watch probably rakes in around $5,000 in donations during their weekly 1 hour streams on YouTube. These people get nothing in return other than some weird satisfaction that the guy streaming has acknowledged them in some way.
I guess what I’m trying to hint at is that with Pokémon pack openings you at least get something in return. You’re not just that one guy who donated $750 to get a guy to read out some short message for everyone to forget about 5 seconds later, you’re buying something and have the bonus of it potentially being entertaining at the same time.
Personally I don’t see the appeal as I feel like the act of opening a booster pack for myself would be significantly more satisfying, but we’re all different.
As someone who also watches a lot of Mario maker, who do you watch? I never got people giving money to streamers at all tbh, most of the time they don’t even acknowledge it
I guess my issue is I’ve never purchased cards this way since I’ve started collecting. I’ve leveraged eBay, Mercari and local deals to get cards at affordable prices. I see mint holos online for most base set through neo for 100$ or less but a raw pack will cost substantially more. What I’m gathering is a lot the price you pay is that shout out and the feeling of inclusion and I can see how it’s worth it to some.
Hypothetically, i could buy a base set pack from pokerev and pull a holo ninetales and I automatically lose money. We don’t always see PSA 10s out of a pack. I’m cool with modern rip and ships with the fact that champions path and hidden fates are impossible to find at the store.
I don’t get excited over box breaks but the one I did with Steve Aoki was different. 100% of the proceeds went to our charity. Every Cent. And the fact we limited it to Celebrity’s and PokemonCelebrities made it extra fun watch. So even though I had to take a cake to the face it was a blast to make.
And for what it’s worth, we only charged the going rate for the packs.
I think that was the most excited I’ve ever seen you and it was a blast to watch. I’m not sure if you already have buyers for your next break, but I would absolutely buy one (as long as it’s for charity)
Donating to charity while simultaneously expressing your love for Pokémon is damn good reason to do a box break! I don’t think anyone could argue with that.
