What is a "true collector"?

I’ll add a condiment-y take (not quite spicy) milque-post: there are more genuine Pokemon fans that claim to be in Pokemon for the money than there are evil investors masquerading as tru collectors.

no true scotsman collector cares about the monetary value :triumph:

For me it’s someone who isn’t concerned about the value of the collection. I mean it’s good to know if you’ll insure it. But I mean as in keeping track to know whens the time to sell. Just gotta enjoy the cards.

I currently hold the world’s largest collection of E4 staff tokens, which obviously makes me the one true collector. That fraud smpratte doesn’t even have a single one!

Anyone who spends more money than me on cards is not a true collector. Anyone who spends less money than me on cards, likewise, is not a true collector. simple as that

I’ve always thought of it as someone who is really dedicated to collecting in general, maybe with other things even besides Pokemon cards and does it mainly for enjoyment and not for the money. For example, as a child I collected Pokémon but also MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh and even some sports cards, and it was just for fun and because of a genuine interest in collecting things. I never cared about them being more valuable someday, or that they would ever be an “investment”.

On the other hand, a lot of people may have only gotten into Pokemon card collecting recently because of popularity or influencers, or because they heard people were making a lot of money off it in terms of investment. They didn’t really “care” about the collecting element, they were more concerned with maybe making some quick money instead.

For example, people who started trying to hoard sealed boxes or certain graded cards and immediately flip them in a short-term window. To me, they aren’t really “true” collectors, but that’s just my personal opinion. I’m not saying they can’t do it, it just doesn’t seem like a really genuine reason to collect something to me because at that point you’re not really enjoying it like most people would I feel, you’re just trying to make money.

So overall, it’s mostly a subjective thing in ways. But, I do feel there’s people who collect out of true enjoyment of what they are collecting, and others who may just collect in hopes of selling it or flipping it for a profit. We all have different reasons for collecting anything in the end.

People who throw away Oddish cards are not true collectors

When you destroy packs and chase cards for views, obviously.

COLLECTOR 1: “Shoot him! I’m the true collector!”

COLLECTOR 2: “No, shoot him! He’s no true collector at all!”

ME: “Everyone just shut up and let me think!!”
