@chrisbalestra , Ya I probably should have typed it out better. It seemed clear to my when I made it but apparently not. I typed it up on phone versus this response on computer so hopefully im more clear this time.
@garyis2000 , The examples I gave, of which there are many more, are over many many days. Regardless of the argument about “complaining about logan paul” or not, my opinion stands firm about Logan, he is not a good person. I’m sure when you hang out with him he seems like a great person, but the choices he’s made over the years continuously and recently show he’s not a good person.
@caughtatpoint , I appreciated the long opinion as topics like these deserve longer more fleshed out opinions so hopefully you’re ready for mine. As @chrisbalestra , pointed out, perhaps I didnt formulate my response very well. I have 0 issue whatsoever with how logan has changed pokemon. Despite the fact that it is harder for me to afford cards I want or find packs on shelves, I have 0 anger or anything towards Logan and his involvement in Pokemon. He’s clearly a guy passionate about pokemon and if he wants to do box breaks and buy up cards, there is literally nothing wrong with that.
I understand why complaining about empty shelves and scalpers because of Logans involvement in the hobby is just annoying and spreading negativity. I also understand just complaining that one bad dude is in the hobby is also just spreading negativity. I am doing neither. I am simply upset with people parading Logan as a truly good or changed person. I think we need to be honest, that “Yes, Logan is in the hobby, there’s nothing wrong with that and he’s not doing anything wrong by being in the hobby” BUT we need to be honest, he’s not some great guy. Just like how in the Kanye subreddit, you can talk about his music and albums, say how great they are, but need to be honest that Kanye himself is not a good guy. I am a huge Kanye fan but it is annoying to see other huge Kanye fans that don’t want to admit at the very least that overall he’s not a good guy and definitely has done some bad things. It’s separating the art from the artist, or in Logans case the creator from the content. I feel people don’t want someone who makes stuff they like or relates to them to be a bad person so they try to excuse their flaws and make them out to be better (sometimes much better) than they really are. Celebrity worship basically.
I don’t see a thread about Logan and immediately post “God, this guy again, hes terrible stop talking about him” because clearly what he’s doing is very big in the hobby and deserves to be talked about. It’s when im reading page 12 of the discussion and see someone say “Look at this video, Logan said he’s changed, he’s a pretty good dude nowadays” that I respond with my criticism of Logan.
So, with scotts response, he said “more toxic than logan”. I’m pretty sure we can agree when hes calling Logan toxic, it means his actions outside of the hobby. I find his actions outside of the hobby to be reprehensible. For scott to call even the most entitled complainer about Logan “more toxic” is in bad taste to say the least. Also I think there needs to be at least come acknowledgement that the hobby has changed and is much more difficult for the average person. And anyone complaining about it being Logans fault is clearly directing frustration the wrong way but it is a lot to change or adapt to and is reasonably so very frustrating for many. Obviously not everyone can afford 1st ed base set anymore and that was inevitable, but as someone who was collecting for a couple of years before all this hype, it has become much more difficult to enjoy the hobby this past year. I think Reina made a really great post about this that acknowledges this issue and how it effects discussion and forums like this. As people in the hobby, we need to adapt, but you can also admit that the change sucks. (I also want to add, the change more adversely affects people in the hobby with smaller collections or capital and more favorably affects people with larger collections and capital, like scott or gary. So when veterans with huge collections complain about people with tiny collections, I would imagine it can be very frustrating. Again I think Reina’s post greatly acknowledged this.)
Ideally the conversation should have avoided talk about Logan as a person but if you want to talk about Logans box break, youre gonna talk about its affect on the hobby. If youre gonna talk about its affect you gotta talk about WHO is watching the box break and many of those WHO are Logans fan. Then Logan as a person and his content come into discussion and then page long arguments about Logan being a good or bad guy ensue.
It seems as always on the hobby, any complaining gets lumped together, good or bad, and then complained about itself. I think there are some things worth complaining about or criticizing, but all complaining gets lumped into the same “crybaby” trope. Scotts initial response was probably a lot more lighthearted than my response warranted but I was frustrated at any dismissal of criticism of Logan at all.
Soooo anyways I guess in short: Logan opening pokmon isn’t bad, people complaining about logan opening pokemon are bad, people saying logan is good are bad.
